When you put your car in gear. The engine will move slightly.
Check your exhaust is not banging on the body. Give the tailpipe a good wiggle.

I have a 1992 Ford F350.Just replaced the rear end. It still makes a clunking noise when I put it in reverse. What could it be

the "backlash" felt by reversing the drive shaft direction is normally the clearance in the spider gears in the diff so to get rid off that ( not necessary unless it is excessive) is to pull the diff center out and fit new thrust washers behind the spider gears
next check the diff mount bushes as the diff reaction will move the bolts in the mounts and make the noise

My 04 plate renault clio has a constant knocking noise coming from the gearbox. I recently replaced the circlip from the driveshaft to the gearbox because i had lost all drive and the clip had...

The problem is with the clip being broken into probably more than two pieces, all pieces must be recovered otherwise any pieces left will fall deeper into the gearbox causing disruption between moving parts and that's causing damage within, my suggestion to this problem is to open up the gearbox draining plug and check for metal parts falling out with in the oil if that's the case then the gearbox is destroyed and will have to be opened up for examination

L reg, petrol, 3 door renault clio. n it squeals like a pig.

That is your trust bearing in your clutch assembly, its a cheap part but involves basically a clutch change to sort out, you can either live with it till the clutch fails or depending on how long its been since it was last changed, bite the bullet and get a whole new clutch fitted.

Engine runs vehicle wont move Possible ring gear? 84 Topaz

Is it a metal shaft? When you put it in drive does it make any noise? Does the speedometer move? Does it make a loud clicking sound when you put it back in Park?

Possible Tranny problem...

I am sorry to have to tell you this but it sounds to me like your transmission is shot and will need a rebuild. If you can get it to a transmission shop they will tell you 100% what wrong with it. .

When i put it in reverse it makes a loud clunk

Hi Ali,

This sounds like one or more of your motor/powerplant mounts is broken. Here is an easy test:

Have someone sit in the driver's sear with engine running and trans. in Park.
You stand in front with the hood open. Have them shift from Park to Reverse, and then Drive and back to Reverse and Park, taking time to stay in each gear and give some throttle while holding the brake pedal tight. This will rock or move the engine a certain amount as they shift through the gears and apply power lightly. It will move alot more violently with broken mounts.

If you have a clunking noise on Reverse shifts, you should be able reproduce this with the hood up and pinpoint the noise and/or sight the faulty motor mount with a friend's help. Good luck, I hope this puts you on the right track to fixing this annoying noise.

Sincerely, Tater Todd
