Cam / cranshaft timing on 97 vw polo classic 1.6l

Cambelt & waterpump have been changed , but timing seems to be off . i've checked the rotor , cam & crankshaft pulley - all ligned up but vehicle does not start.....please help !

Hello, VW polos 1.0, 1.4. 1.6, suffer from carbon bulid up in the throttle bodys causing bad idling, esp the Bosch Mono-Motronic (Throttle Body Injection systems), a good clean with carb cleaner should repair the problem, also engine temp sensor replacement and idle speed control valve replacement can help idle problems.

SOURCE: MISFIRING ON CYLINDER 1 VW POLO 1.4 3CYLINDER

I have changed a few cylinder heads under warranty for this type of problem. The exhaust valve guides wear, this causes the exhaust valve to seat badly, giving low compression. if one cylinder compresion reading is more than about 50 psi below the others, then this warrants head removal. It is quite a job, due to the fact that the camshft id chain driven. If you are up for it then once the head is removed, poor liquid into the exhaust ports and see if it leaks out through any of the exhaust valves.

The timing could be 180 degrees out you will have to do it all over again. Bring #1 cylinder upto TDC check the distributor rotor arm that it is pointing to #1 plug wire, It is important that the cams are on the intake stroke and not on the exhaust stroke. The crank is no big deal just make sure the marks are lined up.

My vw polo classic 1.6 2001 model petrol don't want to start,no spark and cuts off itself while driving changed distributor,cap,rotor,coil,fuel filter but still same problem .What could be the cause?


You don't say whether you have physically checked the spark when it is not starting or it has cut itself off. This is probably the easiest check to do and it could provide the answer.

Two possibilities spring to mind that caused problems in the dim and distant past though it could be something else entirely and only good systematic checking will isolate the fault.

I seem to remember the fuel pump relay, which contained electronics, sometimes played hide and seek for some time before they failed altogether.

Not sure if your car uses a hall effect generator for crank or cam position/trigger information but these too can play hide and seek.

Timing settings on my vw polo 1.4i 2000 model classic


Hi Sheldon are the breaker points clean, and are they opening when the cam comes to the high point. There should be a gap of 1-1.5 mm when the cam is at its highest. A quick way To check for spark turn the engine until the points are fully closed then hold a lead with a plug in it to the cylinder head. Then with a screwdriver manually open and close the points. Do this with the ignition on and you should see a spark. Good Luck.

Oil light keeps comeing on ???


Remove the electric sender and install mechanical oil gauge to check that you have proper oil pressure. Bet ya the main bearings are not fitted correctly or the engine wasn't cleaned during overhaul and now bearings are trashed.

I just bought a 03 Renault Megane 1.6 (Petrol) and after 2 weeks the car developed a rattling sound from the engine bay. I had my car checked and the mechanic suspects the waterpump needs replacing along...


He's just trying to upsell. The pump should have been replaced with the belt last month. I always recommend that if one goes the other should be replaced, for this very reason. Unless the water pump trashed the belt I wouldn't put the timing kit back in it. One month old... There is nothing wrong with them. But again the pump could have ate the belt, check it, if it is chewed up or missing teeth replace the belt only. And he's just giving you a line of ----, for the alignment part.

Do I chanage water pump when changing timing belt on 2002 lexus GS300?


Hi there,

Most Japanese designed engines have an internally mounted water pump, usually driven by the cambelt.

When we talk in terms of cam design, there are two types of engines: a) Interference and b) non-interference.

An interference egine means - if the cambelt were to break whilst engine is running, there will be major internal engine damage.
A non-interference engine means - if the cambelt were to break whilst engine is running, there will NOT be any serious internal damage to the engine.

Note: the GS300 engine (3.0L 6-cyl) is considered a Non-Interference engine.

So, one of the most critical compenents which MUST be changed, is the cambelt itself. Most manufacturers recommend changing this belt every 90,000 - 100,000km's (80,000 miles). If you have a non-interference engine, this period is not as critical, but should still be changed soon, to avoid the inconvenience of a breakdown whilst travelling.

The 2nd critical compenent is the Water Pump. The worst possible outcome of a failed waterpump, is your engine will suddenly drain of all coolant, resulting in serious overheating, causing serious internal damage to your engine.

Although there is no specified time to change the waterpump, a waterpump endures wear and tear like any component and lifespan can reduce rapidly beyond 100,000km's (80,000 mles). As the waterpump is situated next to the cambelt, it is a general rule to change out both cambelt and waterpump at the same time.

The majority of the cost to replace the cambelt, is in labor (ie opening the engine etc). If you choose to replace only one of these components, you will need to be prepared to pay for same procedure again in future, to replace the 2nd component.

Therefore, it can be more economical in the long term, to have both components changed together.
