There are lots of components that can cause overheating. Are/is the cooling fan working adequatel?. How is the belt? Check the tstat you installed....with the engine cold, start and idle the car. Check the radiator hose every 60 seconds to see if it is hot. If the tstat is working, the coolant will flow from the engine to radiator and verify its working properly. Next test is again with cold engine....remove radiator cap and start engine. Did coolant come out with force....water pump may be bad. Start with these suggestions

If it over heated before the thermostat, replace the radiator cap. Make sure the coolant (recommend just water until this is fixed) is full. When disconnecting the upper hose you lose all the coolant from the engine and about 1/3 of the coolant in the radiator. If you only full the radiator you don't have enough water. The new remonstrate needs to open for you to get enough water. In short- take radiator cap off. Start the engine. Fill radiator. Watch level for 5min, filling as needed.

I'm not really familiar with JEEP mechanics but if you've replaced your water pump and it's still overheating with full water/coolant level, you should check the thermostat; when it fails, it's a common cause or overheating in all kind of cars

What could cause my car to over heat when I replaced my water pump and thermostat

Hello Martin, I have seen someone install a thermostat upside down . This causes the thermostat to not open . Was the engine overheating before you replaced the water pump and thermostat ? If the engine has been excessively overheated, this could cause a blown head gasket .

Overheating after driving three miles

I would replace the thermostat. Its a cheap fix and most likely the issue. If you replace the thermostat and are still overheating then you may have a more serious issue. But going 3 miles and overheating sound like the thermostat is not opening up at operating temperature.

It sounds like your thermostat has gone bad and sticking close, Replace the Thermostat and Antifreeze. When replacing the thermostat, buy a fail safe thermostat so you will not have a overheating problem when the thermostat fails. Good luck and hope this helps. Keep me posted, be glad to help.
