How do you know when a 2003 alero Oldsmobile have jumped timing.

remove a rocker cover for no 1 bank and place the timing mark on the harmonic balancer on the TDC mark. The valves on no 1 piston will both be fully closed or in a rocking position when a bit of movement at the harmonic balancer movers the valves up or down. otherwise it it still goes then the timing is right

How do you set TDC?

Yes, there's timing marks on all engines. You'll find a mark on the harmonic balancer that the pullys bolt to on crankshaft. Other mark is on a tab bolted to the engine to one side of the balancer. There's a TDC mark stamped into this tab for Top Dead Center of the #1 cylinder. Place these to marks in alignment and your there.

How TDC related to timing

TDC stands for 'Top Dead Center', and refers to the first piston and the harmonic balancer: with the spark plug removed in the first firing cylinder, you turn the harmonic balancer till it tops out (the piston-you can use the eraser end of a pencil, sticking it down till you feel it hit) when accomplished you set your mark and that is your TDC now you adjust with a timing gun/light using that mark. This is always nessecary when engine has been changed, altered or rebuilt, because stock specs no longer apply. . .

TDC

TDC or 0 degrees timing advance will have #1 piston at the top of the cylinder. The timing mark on the harmonic balancer or crank pulley will be on the 0 reference mark.

How is the timeing marks r aline 19992.5 ford ranger

At the front of the engine you will find a pulley that will drive the belts to run the water pump, alternator, power steering pump, air conditioner, etc. This pulley is called the 'Harmonic Balancer' and is actually 2 pieces pressed together on a rubber bush which acts as a 'shock absorber' for the engine. This pulley is marked with several lines to indicate the position of the engine rotation, measured in degrees. The longest line usually indicates TDC (Top Dead Centre of piston No 1). The other lines indicate where ignition should fire (Usually between 5-10 degrees before TDC) and where valves are opened and closed (before and after TDC) both ignition and valve timing vary depending on engine/camshaft configuration. The lines on the harmonic balancer will align with a pointer that is cast into the timing cover.

I REMOVED THE DISTRIBUTER CAP AND AFTER I PUT IT BACK THE CAR REFUSED TO START .

Are all the wires going to the right cylinder? if yes....Did you mark the gearing/rotor location before removing? You may have thrown off the timing for the distributor. If this is the case, Remove the distributor and set the engine to TDC (top dead center). This can be done by spinning the crankshaft pulley/harmonic balancer twice clockwise until the marking on the pulley and timing cover is set to "0/Zero" Once set at TDC, set the distributor (cap must be removed) to TDC/Cylinder 1.

Where is the reference mark, for TDC of the 1st cylinder, according to the pneumonic balancer located and what does it look like? I have a cougar with 3.8 V6 motor. Need help locating these marks.

The TDC mark on the "Harmonic" balancer is a white line. It is located on the thick metal part of the balancer nearest to the engine block.

Timing marks on crank 99 passat

Do you have a 1.8T or the V6?

On the 1.8T, there is not timing mark on the crank. The mark is on the harmonic balancer. The corresponding mark is on the plastic cover for the timing belt, so to get TDC, you must first install the lower timing belt cover and then install the harmonic balancer.

Looking at the manual for the V6, it appears that it is the same. The marks are on the timing belt cover and harmonic balancer.
