SOURCE: Oil consumption

Bad valve seals
Worn valve guides
Pressurized crankcase (oil pan) due to a clogged PCV valve or breather system
Blow-by from worn piston rings

Bad valve seals: The valves are located in thecylinder head above the combustion chamber. Oil is pumped at 50 to 80 psi of pressure into the top of the head, lubricating the valve-train; the valveshave seals on them to stop the flow of oil down into the engine when the valve is open. If the seals fail, oil is allowed to flow down into the combustion chamber and is burned.
Worn valve guides: The valves are guided by a small cylindrical chamber called a valve guide. These guides wear over time causing eccentricity (or slop); the excess gap allows the flow of oil down the valve stem into the combustion chamber to be burned. What about the valve seal you say? Well, the gap is too great for the seal to stop the oil flow, so down it goes to be burned.
Pressurized crankcase due to clogged PCV or breather system:The car's engine is a giant pump, consequently it must breathe. The PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system does just this, allows the engine to exhaust the excess pressure build-up (which is a natural phenomenon of the internal combustion engine). Carbon build-up is a by-product of an engine and can build up in the PCV system, clogging the breathing passages. This in turn pressurizes the oil pan and pushes oil up into the fuel delivery system, where it is fed into the engine and burned.
Blow-by from worn piston rings: The pistons in your car's engine have seals around them in the form of rings. These rings do two things:

  1. Seal the combustion chamber so the precious power developed from the firing of the cylinder is not lost.
  2. Provide vital lubrication to the cylinder walls.
When the rings wear out, the pressure from combustion reverses down into the oil pan, pressurizing it and forcing oil into the valve covers, through the breather system, back into the fuel delivery system, and into the engine to be burned.
You may ask yourself, "What can I do to stop this from happening?" Keep your oil and filter changed every 3,000 miles and keep the air filters changed every 12,000 miles!! This will keep sludge and carbon buildup down to a minimum. Understand that you can't stop mechanical wear, but you can slow it down!

Sounds like you need an axle seal for leak, and rev problem should be idle air contolr valve on Throttle body,If high mileage recommend get new throttle body assembly.Note after replacing T/Body will have high idle till driven for a while.

SOURCE: I have 199 Saturn SC2 it uses 1 quart oil about

Bad rings or valves, but since it smokes on acceleration, i'm going to guess the problem is with the valves. You may need to take it to a shop to have the head rebuilt; a quart every ten days is VERY excessive unless you are driving a 25+ year old car 100 miles a day.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news,

SOURCE: saturn engine using oil

the oil is almost certainly being burned in the engine, this means the piston rings have lost there seal, u will need an overhaul of the engine.

If it runs with the throttle slightly open, Clean the throttle body and IAC motor. Also check or replace the air filter. Break clean and a tooth brush works for the throttle. Takes a second or two to start. Then rev it and spray some break clean in the throttle. Not sure for the wrong engine oil code? What was it?

The car has been overheating. It recently stalled. I did a radiator flush, changed the thermostat, and bled the air out. The heater will no longer blow hot air and the engine makes a clicking noise when...

Other causes of overheating and valve clicking under load can also be LOW motor oil or wrong viscosity(check level when engine is cold) aswell as a dirty oil filter. Also, WRONG spark plugs. If your running the ultra high performance iridium/platinum plugs on a car the does not require it, you can change the timing on it due to the lack of resistance on those plugs. Use standard plugs to notice the difference on power, emmissions and MPG.

When do the spark plugs need changed

Spark plugs like any electrical device become worn over time. Spark plugs also work under extreme condition. The use of cheap fuels will leave deposits, poor maintenance, bad air filters, old plug wires, all these items can cause a spark plug to fail or not perform at its peak level. Also spark plugs use a gap or Electrical bridge that is used for high voltage to arc across. The larger the gap the hotter the spark until you reach a point that the coil can not bridge the gap and then you get a misfire. Also when a plug gets deposits from either oil, poor fuel, carbon this will shorten the gap and cause a weaker spark resulting in poor performance, wasted fuel and engine dieseling or Run on after the ignition is turned off.
These are the simple reasons for spark plug replacement.

Sluggish performance and engine light - added new plugs and oil

You need to check for engine codes to see what is wrong. Bring it to a parts store for a free scan for codes. The check engine light indicates a problem, probably the emissions system, which is causing the poor performance. The parts store will plug a hand held scan tool into the cars diagnostic port (usually located under the dash) and 'read' any codes stored in the cars computer. They can them tell you what code #'s come up, what they mean, and how to correct the problem. If you have any questions after that, post them here w/ the code #;s for further help.

Having problems with my idle valve

To do a trouble shooting first deal with the simplest. first change the spark plugs it may have fouled. The spark plug high tension wires may have cracks, which could cause the electricity to jump off the engine body. then check/change the fuel filter if it is dirty you have to check the dirt in the tank or the fuel pump. maybe its the supply of fuel that is causing the erratic revs. because of fuel supply/quality. All this first steps are just as well performed to ensure a healthy engine if it still persist, that's the time to ponder the electric controls which will need a specialist to trouble shoot.
