Question about 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier
After breaking off the ignition key in the ignition cylinder, the locksmith came and removed it. He made a replacement key, but it will not turn the ignition cylinder. The locksmith said it looked like the actuator rod was broken. $250 plus to repair and a 4 day wait. Any suggestions appreciated!
L would try dealer price may not be that bad, if you have broken a part inside it probably means it is worn out..Hope this helps.....

Yes unless the rack has been broken also, most parts stores carry them. Just turn your key and see if it moves or not. The out side shell of a colloum is mainly for looks.

SOURCE: 2003 cavalier key won't turn.
very common failure on chevy's. You will need to replace the key tumbler. Even if you got it to turn chances are you would end up stranded if it happens again.

I think that you need to investigate what is making the resistance. I would remove the ignition switch, give some reisitance on the rod, and see of the key, or the linkage, including the actuator rod, are binding. There are pieces that get dry and make resistance, like you describe...
