Key wont turn in ignition of 2004 cavalier

After breaking off the ignition key in the ignition cylinder, the locksmith came and removed it. He made a replacement key, but it will not turn the ignition cylinder. The locksmith said it looked like the actuator rod was broken. $250 plus to repair and a 4 day wait. Any suggestions appreciated!

SOURCE: ignition actuator rack broke from acuator rod

Yes unless the rack has been broken also, most parts stores carry them. Just turn your key and see if it moves or not. The out side shell of a colloum is mainly for looks.

SOURCE: 2003 cavalier key won't turn.

very common failure on chevy's. You will need to replace the key tumbler. Even if you got it to turn chances are you would end up stranded if it happens again.

SOURCE: turning key forward to start ,has some resistance.

I think that you need to investigate what is making the resistance. I would remove the ignition switch, give some reisitance on the rod, and see of the key, or the linkage, including the actuator rod, are binding. There are pieces that get dry and make resistance, like you describe...

2001 chevy cavalier lost key can I replace the ignition switch without a key?

the original key is coded to your car.
So changing the barrel to have a new key wont help and ill tell you why.
Inside the original key is a transponder chip that is programmed to the cars immobiliser unit.
Attached to the ignition barrel is whats called a reader coil and its job is to read the keys chip when inserted in the barrel to deactivate the immobiliser so that the car will start.
What you need to do is contact a good knowlegable locksmith to provide a new key and code it to your car

Ignition lock cylinder failed. Remove it and take it to a locksmith to have it repaired or go buy a new lock cylinder from BMW. $$$

I lost my key for an 98 ford explorer and i just got a key made but wont trun the locksmith made a key from the door lock we put it in the ignition but it wont trun

There should be 8 cuts total on the key. While the door and the ignition share some of the same cuts you cannot get all the cuts from one cylinder. I believe that the door cylinder only uses 6 cuts and the ignition cylinder uses 7 cuts. The cut closest to the head of the key is #1 and the cut closest to the tip is #8. If I remember correctly the ignition cylinder uses cuts 1 - 7 and the door cylinder uses cuts 3 - 8.If the locksmith cannot decode the ignition cylinder you can try to contact you local ford dealer and see if they can find a key code and cut a key from that otherwise you may have to replace your ignition cylinder.

In my 1992 toyota celica, the key wont turn

I've had the same problem with a few older Toyotas. Most likely you need to take your ignition lock cylinder to a qualified locksmith and have it overhauled. Another option is to purchase an all new lock cylinder, but then unless you don't mind having a different key for the ignition, you would have to take the new cylinder to the locksmith to get it re-keyed to match the other locks on the car. Look for a locksmith with a AAA certification. You can order a new cylinder at a reasonable price from sellers on eBay or from www.rockauto.com.

Removing the cylinder is not too difficult - refer to your car's service manual for complete details. Basically you will need to remove the trim panel covering the lock, undo the fastener bolts/screws, and then usually there is a tab on the underside of the cylinder that you will need to push in in order to slide the cylinder out. The catch is that you will need to get the key into the ACC position in order to pull out the cylinder.

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

My wife tried to to start her 2004 cavalier with the wrong key, and now the ignition will not turn with the right key

Hello foxrider.
Chances are when the wrong key was put in it may have damaged the lock tumblers.
The lock cylinders on these cars are enough of a problem using proper keys. Not very well made to begin with.
You could try a very light oil such as WD40 to lubricate the tumblers in case 1 may be stuck up into the barrel of the cylinder and gently run the key in and out several times.
Jiggling the key inside the cylinder will sometimes loosen them up too.
If you do get it working it may be a good idea to replace the cylider and key soon as it may fail you again.
I hope you succeed in getting it to turn, otherwise it may be a job for a locksmith.
Good luck with it.

Key won't turn in the ignition

if you tap on the lock cylinder with a small hammer it may jar it enough to get it to turn.....to replace the tumblers you will need to remove the lock cylinder and then disassemble it. each tumbler has a certain number on it and will need replaced with that same number. it is easier to have it dealer or locksmith do it.
