The mass airflow can get dirty and you will get trouble codes for everything under the hood except for the mass airflow. Try unplugging your mass airflow and driving the vehicle, if your problem goes away you need to clean the sensor. Buy some mass airflow cleaner though because other cleaners can damage the coating on the sensor.

SOURCE: i have a 2002 toyota tacoma and a code of p0420

before changing a rather expensive catalytic converter i would first make sure that the o2 sensor is working correctly, as this sensor will say the cat is bad when it is the sensor it self that has become faulty. there are 4 sensors 2 before the catalytic converters and 2 after the cats, if these become dirty or faulty they will give you that same code.
in any case bank one is usually the right side of the engine and would be the first cat in the system.

Where is the O2sensor bank 1 at with a code of P0420. AND do I need to replace both sensors upstream and down. Or just the one that is showing up on the obd scanner.

Bank one is front side of cat. It should also tell u if it's cat 1 or cat 2. Depending on make an modle an yr. Catalyst 1 bank 2 is left cat back sensor. Catalyst 2 bank 2 is right cat back sensor. U do not have to replace upstream also. My o2 sensor Catalyst 2 bank 2 went bad. Had engine code for burning rich bank 2. Replaced tha down stream sensor an fixed problem runs better an better gas. This was in 97 gmc suburban. Idk what vehicle ur askin about. An I'm not to familiar with much about cars jus trucks an suvs.

Occassional bucking of car....

code p 0420 refers to cat converter system bank 1 --efficiency below threshold====causes --cat converter===wiring ===HO2S ( heated oxygen sensor in the exhaust manifold before the cat converter
would not waste money as the ecm does 60 tunes up every minute and adjust whatever is needed to maintain optimum tune for the engine
replace the heated oxygen sensor to allow the ECM to maintain the tuneup and rep[lace the cat converter if it is faulty

Code p0420 on 97 lexus es300

P0420 is catalyst below threshold. It is triggered via the rear o2 sensor (post cat), so you may want to check that sensor to make sure it's functioning properly.

Po420 code monte carlo ls 2001

PO420 code is for catalyst system efficiency below threshold (bank 1) Usually it means that it is time for a new catalytic converter on bank number 1. Cylinder bank number 1 is always the bank with the number 1 spark plug in it.

Engine code p0420

The P0420 code is set when the oxygen sensor after the catalytic converter gives a reading the same or very close to the reading of the oxygen sensor(s) before the catalytic converter.

There are usually three possible causes...
The front oxygen sensor (before the cat) is giving an incorrect reading.
The rear oxygen sensor (after the cat) is giving an incorrect reading.
The catalytic converter is not working properly.

Since you recently replaced the cat, the logic points to the sensors, but it could be the cat again. Aftermarket converters are usually smaller than OEM and don't last as long.

Our Subaru encountered this issue several years ago under warranty. The first time the dealer replaced the front oxygen sensor. This was the cheapest repair and since it was an intermittent problem I am sure they hoped to delay the issue until the warranty was up. The second time they replaced the catalytic converter and we haven't had any more issues.

Most probably and if a cat is not flowing proper is causes back preasure that can result in sticking or burned vavles, mechanic not nice by saying ignore the cat effiency code p0420.Can ussually have cat replaced at aftermarket muffler shop for approx. $200 cheaper than valve job or excessive fuel that you have used and damage that may occur to your engine.
