SOURCE: I have a 2003 Ford
it can be the actuator swith located at the transfer case . or it can be the hubs themselves. Ford recommends that the hubs be cleaned at least once a year or more if the 4 wheel is used often. They are not that hard to remove and clean. And lubricate. If you do use grease do not pack the grease inside the hub. Here is a site that may help .aa1car.com/library/2004/bf60414.htm . Add the http:// www dot. if this helps you vote an answer

There is another recall for the cruise control. This time it is about transmission issues and wiring to brakes and electrical issues. This could be a free recall repair.
