Have it checked for free at most autoparts stores.
They will give you one or more "Pxxxx" codes.
That code is the key to the problem.
They most often offer you the part to fix it.
They do not reset the engine light for you, but if the part/s were replaced, you can either disconnect the battery for 10 minutes to reset it, or in many cases, just drive around like normal, and after the computer knows there is no problem anymore, it will go off.

What causes your car to spit and sputter

I would start by scanning the engine controller to see if the onboard engine controller knows anything about it. Is the Check Engine light on? If so, find out why the light is on and you will most likely find out why your car is spitting and sputtering.

Pressure buildup in the gas tank which causes the car to sputter and die unexpectedly.

I have never seen or heard such thing. You have a different problem. Is the "check engine light on?" Gas tanks have pressure in them on regular bases and I have never seen car sputtering because of a pressure in the gas tank.
