Question about 2004 Mini Cooper

1 Answer

My 2004 Mini Cooper, over heated a couple of days ago. The water level went back to normal after leaving it for a couple of hours. I have just taken my car out again and the water level was just above the minimum, having just returned from the short journey the water level has risen to the maximum although my temp gauge is fine. regards Kate.

You may have a bad engine fan, head gasket issue or thermostat issue. best to have a shop check it out.

SOURCE: Mini Cooper convertible is overheating, fan contiues after stop

I had this exact same problem -- for about a year and a half! Replaced thermostat, replaced sensor twice, replaced overflow tank, replaced radiator cap, placed a grounding kit on the car in case the problem was electrical ... and was ABOUT to replace thermostat again and then the water pump when a new mechanic suggested we bleed air out of the cooling system. The heater core was PACKED with air, as was the upper hose valve area. Previous mechanic had been using a pressurized fill device to bleed the system and this had just been backing air into the heater core. There are two valves under the hood for bleeding air -- one on the heater core and one on the upper hose. It only takes a few minutes to fix this!

I have an 04 mini cooper, every 3 months it decides to throw out its water and over heats, it only over heats when sat in traffic, can anybody please tell me what it could be? have taken it to the garage...

If the fault is occcuring only when in traffic, that is when it is idling with no free flow of air to the radiator to cool off, then the suspect can be the radiator itself.
If some of the radiator pipes are blocked then this can be possible.
So do a good flushing of the radiator when a little warm flush out use coolant and flush after few days, if rust is seen repeat till all the rust is over.

The dial should come up slowly to just a hair above the center point. This should happen within the first few minutes of driving.

Mini Cooper temperature gauge goes to red zone, fan comes on

If you have a new thermostat, then your temp sensor is faulty. If sensor is new, then it is the wiring to sensor or problem with the ECM

Overheating

Posible thermastat sticking closed. If thermastat doesn't open heated water is trapped in the engine causing it to run hot and not allowing hot water to travle to the heater core when called for.
