i actually just did this a couple days ago, this takes about 20 minutes and a little bit of patience. When you pop your hood you will see a protective piece of plastic over the headlights/radiator, you firstly have to remove the plastic clips holding that piece then pull that piece of plastic off, once done u will see 2 bolts holding each headlight in place, i believe it is a 9/16 socket but if not just find the one that fits, remove the 4 bolts (2 for each headlight) and pull the headlight in an up and outwards manor. if you feel any resistance do not yank look at why it is catching and clear it, then it should just pop out (the headlight and the corner piece and clipped together so dont pull it too far out) then when the bulb is accessible pull the old bulb, put the new bulb in and voila place the headlight back into position, redo the 4 bolts holding the headlights and re-attach the plastic headlight/radiator cover. Enjoy the new lights

Sorry, your going to have to remove the dash.

  • Remove the front dash panel by turning the lower screws in a counter-clockwise direction, then unscrewing the single bolt on the lip of the instrument cluster and pulling the panel out. Remove the rear wiper switch and the 4x4 switches, if applicable. Lowering the tilt wheel will allow the panel to be totally removed.
  • Remove the radio, headlight switch module and glove box by turning their screws in a counter-clockwise direction.
  • Remove the main dashboard by unbolting it at the front, between the windshield and firewall. There are six to eight bolts holding it in, and, once they are removed, the dash can be pulled away from the firewall. Be careful not to pull too much, as the wiring harness could become damaged.
  • Drain the coolant system by turning the drain plug on the lower left corner of the radiator and allowing the fluid to fall into the drain pan. Uncapping the radiator can reduce the internal pressure.
  • Remove the heater core hose, on the upper left of the engine bay by pinching their hose clamps with a pair of pliers and pulling them off. Some models will have screw-type hose clamps; turning them counter-clockwise will loosen them. Age and heat may have stuck the hoses to the core nipples, and the hoses can be cut right at these nipples if necessary. Leave enough hose to reconnect the new core.
  • Unbolt the heater core's mounts with a socket wrench in a counter-clockwise direction. Once the bolts are free, the heater core can be maneuvered toward the windshield and slid out. Some coolant may splash out, so have a towel handy.
  • Replace the heater core with a new one by sliding it into place and securing the mounting bolts.
  • Reconnect the heater core's hoses, turn the radiator's drain plug clockwise to close it, then refill the coolant system with a 50/50 percent mix of coolant and water.
  • Reconnect the dashboard to the firewall, then replace the front dash panel and fasten its instrument cluster screw and bottom bolts.
  • Crank up the Jimmy and add coolant until the heater core is filled and blowing hot air.
  • Replace the radiator cap.

First, if your car still runs, pull the fuel pump relay, and start your car, letting it run until it dies. This will depressurize the fuel system. Then you must support the fuel tank, and take loose the straps that hold it up. Slowly lower the tank until you can unhook the tank filler hose and overflow hose by taking the clamps off and sliding the hoses off. lower it some more, and unhook the fuel lines; they require you to insert a special tool around the edge of the connection, however this can be improvised with screwdrivers or a piece of plastic or metal bent into a C shape. Next unhook the wire connection. Once you get it down, it's easiest to empty as much fuel as you can; as this will help you get it back into place. The fuel pump is inside the tank, which locks into place with a 1/8th turn. You will need a hammer and a brass punch for this job, as it needs to be tapped around to unlock. It will then lift out. Compare the two pump assemblies. The inside parts can be slightly different, but ensure that the fuel lines are IDENTICAL and the wire connection is IDENTICAL. The new one will come with a new silicone seal. Ensure that you don't put the new one in in such a way as the float doesn't bind, otherwise you'll be doing this procedure again if you don't like guessing how much gas you have. This can be a challenge to wrestle with putting the new one in, as you have to push it down to compress the new seal, and turn it to lock it. Once you get it started, you can let up and use the hammer and punch again to tighten it the rest of the way. Next, put it back together just as you took it apart, and don't forget to hook up the wires, hoses, and fuel lines. No tools required for the fuel lines, they just snap together. Once everything's tight and hooked up, put gas back in it, and if you haven't already, put the fuel pump relay back in. This you can do as soon as the car dies, and is completely optional if the car won't run at all. You are now ready to start it up, but turn the ignition on to the run position, wait a few seconds for the pump to pressurize, and then start it. My 2001 Chevy Cavalier keeps only heating and leaks coolant. The heater and A/C work. Do i need to replace the heater core or can i just flush it out and replace the hoses. I need help.


FIND the source of the leak and then act accordingly. Could be the core, the hose leaks, a loose clamp, radiator cap.

the only thing I would do differently is I would pinch off the heater hoses and not drain the entire cooling system. This is a nice configuration behind the glove box where the entire heater box doesn't need to be removed like on the majority of other cars.

The heater core is not plugged, it is leaking and will have to be replaced. It will have to be accessed from under the dash on the passenger side. This can be a very difficult item to replace and very time consuming. Plan on it taking a full day.

How to repair heater core for chevy cavalier


I installed a heater core in a 2004 Chevrolet and need to know how to hook up the vent cables (1 goes to the left and 1 goes to the right) for the back of the control knobs. Do they screw in or a are snapped in cant tell.

hello!


this is a very large and time conuming event. the entire dash board must be removed to access the heater case, only then will the heater core be accessable. good luck!
