Question about 2001 Mercury Sable
The part which is in the door track will start to move maybe 1/4 in. and just shutter like it wants to engage and slide to the open position. it does not open but just sits there and shutters. I can not find a trend it happends when the seat is oppcupied and when not oppupied. in the cold and in the hot. Please help we are going crazy with this one.
There is a motor with teeth that engages a plastic ribbin that runs the entire length of the track. The teeth are worn and dont engage the ribbon anymore. In the cold the materials contract so it's less more likely to fail. I would wait until it closes, then unplug the motor so it stays closed. Your passengers can then slip it over them when they get in. Otherwise you are looking at a big exopense in parts and labor. I did fix this in a Ford Tempo by putting a C clamp on the motor to squeeze the gears together.
