Question about 1998 Ford F150 Regular Cab

98 Ford F150 4x4 wont engage

Have a 98 F150 XLT 4x4 ext cab 5.4 V8. Manual shift 4x4. 4x4 worked great last year, this year the front hubs will not engage. I lubed up the linkage between the manual shift lever and the transfer case so that it moves easily. However, still no engagement by the front hubs. The 4x4 light does not illuminate either. The light DOES illuminate however upon start of the engine like it should so I know the light works at least. Is there anything else I can check before tearing into the front hubs? Is there an electrical component on the transfer case that I can check? Are there any vacuum hoses in this system that I can check? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I have a 2003 f150 4x4 and the front tires are not engaging. Have replaced the ac-curator and the shift fork assembly in the front differential. And fixed 6 vacuum leaks. The 4x4 is a manual shift with...

Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc )
Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft.
If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case.
If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem.

I don't want to assume that the front axle works correctly, but it sounds like you got past that bit of testing.

1997 ford f 150 xlt 4x4 it feels like its stuck in low gears it goes in all the gears and not in 4x4

Check vacuum pod on front axle at the gear hub or pumkin it will have a black plastic cover over it this pod engages the gears for 4X4. Remove cover and spray down with WD 40.

F250 4X4 MANUAL HUBS WILL NOT ENGAGE ALSO HAVING

im not sure if a 2000 f150 and a 2000 f250 have the exact steering column, but incase it is then check at the base of the column inside and you may see a triangler shape bracket that the shift cable connects to,there will be 2 torque screws holding the bracket to the column, either a t-20 or t-25 not sure, they may be loose so the shifter will be sloppy...my 2000 f150 had that problem and i stumbled upon it,it seems to be a 2000 year issue...about the manual hubs, try locking them in and drive forward and reverse very slow a few times,if they lock in then they are sticky and it takes time for the spring inside to push then together.lock the hubs in first, then after a while shift to 4x4,because if they are just sticky,it may strip the teeth on the lockouts from the axel turning against the inside of the lockout.

Cant turn on 4wd

Have you checked if the problem is with the front hubs or with the transfer case ?
Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc ).
Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft.
If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case.
If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem.

Next with the truck running, have someone turn the switch to 4WD, and you should see the shift motor diaphragm move

If not, could be the shift fork is stuck ( try manually moving ) or cold be a vacuum leak back to the vacuum shift solenoids

You can remove the 4WD mode switch, and test the resistance on it ( this is also the vacuum line routing )

You might find moisture in the vacuum shift motor diaphragm, not allowing the vacuum to operate it correctly.

I bought a 2000 f150 4x4, 5 speed. the truck

You can try several things. You can stop the vehicle as if you are going into low range and shift the high range 2h, 4h, etc.. Ford advertises the Electric button type as "shift on the fly" but does not say the gears are synchronized to do that with manual engagement.

Change the lube this time to see if the lube is Milky. There have been floods, otherwise the case is sealed whether you park it or drive it. You still could have rust on the shift linkage. You need to move the linkage as you spray it. Then the offbeat chance something was bent from offroading. A Salvage Yard is a wonderful place to learn how a car is built. You may see their part looks different than yours.

Front hubs dont lock when put in 4x4

Probably a vacuum leak. Tranny has to be in Neutral to shift into 4 low, but should be able to shift into 4 high in any gear. The auto locking hubs work off of a vacuum, if there's a leak in the line, they won't engage. If the 4x4 light is on, but the wheels aren't pulling, that's most likely the problem.

Hi, I can't get my transfer case shifter lever into 4 wheel low. It works easily to high. I've got a 1991 F150 4x4 XLT with auto trans and the 5.4 V8. Thanks Tom

make sure you're doing it correctly. floor shift 4wd's usually need to shove the lever to the right or left to scoot into 4LO. if you have manual hubs, make sure they're in. double check the fluid levels and mechanicals to the front Pumpkin to make sure nothings binding up, too.
