Your rear brake light switch might need replacing, you can get free advise from any mechanic about that... As for your heater,hows the radiators cooling system flowing and when was the last time you had it checked or serviced for a thorough clean flush. But first of all, check weather you need to top up with water to max level. The coolant level between min and max is concidered ok, but indicating a leak from 1 of the cooling system hoses, you need only to find and tighten the hose clamps .If the reservior level is below 1/2 way, It is recommended to service the radiators cooling system... replacing the thermostat would be an upgrade to elimanate a possibilty, which requires mechnical assistance and obviously as a last resort to have done... replacing any heater relays and blown fuses is a bonus but also a possiblity...a faulty heater tap causes heater problems. Again asking for free mechnical advise for this or some 1 else who can visually check that its working as you adjust the heater temprature switch while checking for leaks and rough operating sounds from the heater motor under the dash port ...checking faulty heater switchs...then theres taking the whole front dash port out to get at the heaters motor, which im sure you probably wont have to do as you mentioned that the fans are working.

SOURCE: 1992ford ranger -alternator dont charge battery

If there is power to the big wire that is bolted on to the back of the alternator and no power out of the small wires that plug in to the alternator then it is possible you need to replace your alternator. start the vehicle and check to see if there is 14 volts at the battery while the vehicle is running if there is then the alternator is good if not replace your alternator and charge your battery with a charger to make sure you have a proper charge on the battery.

SOURCE: while driving my 95 explorer i noticed the heater

no heat is probably low coolant or bad thermostat,although you have fog and smell ! the heating and cooling systems are closed systems the only way the windows fog is the coolant is hot and steams inside the car due to some leak inside the heater core box. as well as the smell being present. Now it is possible that a little leak has occured where the coolant supply or return line connects to the heater core and is running into the car which is running onto the core and creating steam and smell. hopefully it is a easy clamp tighten fix for you.

Heater/defrost fan speed control not working

If the fan speeds dont increase or decrease when using the control switch.it usually is the blower motor resister has failed. If the blower motor isnt working at all, check the fuses, relay and for power at the blower motor

95 jeep Cherokee heater wont work but rear window defrost still works need help please

Check the blower motor fro good connection, power and ground. Hot wire it to the battery and see if it runs. Check the blower fuse, relay, switch and resistor pack.
blower and rear defrost circuits are totally unrelated.

When the engine is cold,check the coolant level.

Make sure it's on max.

A coolant system should be flush every two years.

===

If you did a coolant flush recently then air pocket can be the cause of the un-even heating problem.

The DIY method is to drive you car onto a ramp or a steep hill.

Iet the engine cool off and top off the coolant tank.

Set MAX heat + MAX fan

Let the engine ran for 20 minutes wih the cap off and the trap air will escape from the coolant reserve tank,

Check coolant level and top off coolant when the engine cools down.

A shop will charge $75+ for this but using an air operated excavate tool!

========

A car with over 90K miles may experience linkage problem to the heater control valve.

The heater control valve (near the firewall) may be stick over time.

Open the hood and move the heater to max and min. Back and forth.

Clean and lube the linkage with WD-40 to free the heater control valve.

If it's a vacuum type heater control valve then cash for leaky vac. hoses.

=======
Move the fan switch back and forth to re-new the electrical conductors.

Pass a vacuum over the control panel to prevent dust build up behind the console.

Defrost fan quit working.

Check it with a test light or Multimeter for power to blower motor first, with switch on high. If no power to motor, problem is elsewhere. Here's a link that will help you. Click on the pictures to expand.
