SOURCE: 2002 Ford Escape will not shift into drive

This is the shift lock...you will need battery to release it electrically but there is an over ride by the shifter..either a button to push or a place to put your ignition key. This will release the shifter

SOURCE: Gear Shift not shifting properly

Depending on whether it is a column shift or floor, you have to get the linkage loose enough to get the car in neutral, move the selector back to the proper setting, and tighten everything up.

If the car is not setting on a hill or incline, you should be able to move the shift levers by hand when you've loosened the linkage and move it until it is in neutral. Put on jack stands and chock the wheels that are on the ground.

My 2003 ford escape stalls when put in park, but not in drive

Does it go into the correct gear if you downshift to 2nd or 1st(shift cable misadjusted)? Could the DTC switch be bad on the side of the tranny? May have to ask Ford to look at it.
I suppose it could be an electrical short at the column,or is it a floor shifter? don-ohio (:^)

Tip

Ford Escape Transmission Shifter Problems

From 2001 through 2002 Ford used a plastic bushing on both ends of the transmission shifter cable that disintegrates over time and when it breaks your cable will slide off the steel stud either under the hood or inside your steering column, making it impossible for you to shift gears. The expensive replacement cable has the same plastic bushings so I decided to fix mine a better way. I had to search a while and measure many steel bushings before finding one that had the perfect inside and outside diameter. Finally I found a wire splice ferrule (12.5 - 14 ga.) used in fencing sold at Tractor Supply http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/fence-wire-ferrules-9-to-12-1-2-ga-pack-of-50 Simply drill a small hole at one end for a cotter pin and then press the ferrule onto the steel stud with pliers. Slide your shifter cable on it and then add a nylon washer and cotter pin. (which the factory should have done for safety anyway!!!!)

Do the brake lights work. If not, it sounds like you have a problem with the brake light switch.
