I have a 2003 cadillac sedan deville that i just bought from a reputable car lot as is with no warranty and the service engine soon light came on and did not go off what could cause the light to come on so soon as i just got the car like yesterday.
The warranty company was able to find a used transmission for $900 which was still under warranty and it will cost 11.5 hours for the install, plus shop supplies and diagnostic. Total cost about $2000. I drove the car for probably at least 10,000 miles and it was leaking a small amount of transmission fluid even after I fixed a seal (waste of money) before getting it fixed. I didn't see the fluid though on my garage floor though as there is something that would catch it.
Cadillac dealer stated this is a known problem with the clutch assembly and that there is a bulletin out on it. The reason the car stalls is due to the transmission not the engine. When the car is at a light or the like there is apparently too much strain from the tranny and it stalls the engine. My car didn't get that far, but after reading a bunch of stuff and looking up the codes it appears to be the case. Of course you could get lucky and the solenoid is just bad, probably not though due to the bulletin.
You can read the codes and clear the codes easy enough. If you don't know how there are many posts on the net.
Maybe just the mileage triggered the computer to turn it on.

IT SAID THE CODE WAS PO741 TORQUE CONVERTER CKT PERFORMANCE OR STUCK OFF TWO CODES CAME UP ONE WAS A STANDING EXSISTING CODE AND THE OTHER WAS A PENDING PREVIOUSLY KNOWN OR THERE BEFORE
I have the same problem recently. I would be driving along and the car would lose power and stall. After sitting for a few minutes, I would turn it back on and it's fine. The indicator then comes on "service engine soon".
Did you get an answer to the problem?
I have the same problem, my car is in the shop as we speek and my extended warranty company (Great Lakes) is replacing the transmission with the a used one. I'd take the car back since they undoubtedly just cleared the error code knowing that the light wouldn't come on for a good 25 miles.
Sorry man, probably need a new transmission, just keep driving it until it breaks, which could be thousands of miles. It will cost the same to replace it now or later.
Take the car to any parts store for a free scan and trouble code. Then come back and maybe we can fix it.
