Question about Cars & Trucks
Check the small wires on the altenator. One may be broken. The insulation will still be intact, but the wire could be broken. It sends power to the car when the engine is running, including the feul pump. It is arking, causing the feul pump to cut on and off.

The 1st thing to do is have a trouble code retrieval test run to see what is making the check engine light come, this is the source of the problem.

Start with new spark plugs, wires and distributor cap. If it wasn't for the missing at idle comment, the hard starting is usually caused by a fuel pump going bad. Don't know if yours is electric or not, but either type will have that symptom.
So start with the easiest.
