How to replace 1998 dodge ram van water pump, reading the manuel but having a hard time getting the cluth nut off, the book say use a special tool what the special tool?

    trying to change thwater pump on my 98 doge pick-up 1500 ram with v8 magnum engine . how do ya get the clutch off?

    you still need to hold the pulley still napa has the tool in question for about twenty dollars makes the job much easier just changed water pump on my 99 dakota and my mothers 2000 grand cherokee

    i believe your referring to that BIG nut on the clutch fan , if you don't have the special clutch fan nut remover , you might be able to borrow one from like a autozone / checker loan - a - tool program . i have improvised with a 1-1/2 " big wrench , its a little loose but it can work , its all down hill after that . good luck

There is a special spanner wrench that you need to hold onto the water pump pulley (the 2 holes in the big pulley the belt rides on).
The tool has a Y shape to it with a handle coming off the bottom end of the Y. There will be 2 pins in the ends of the V that fit into the holes on the pulley (adjustable). You put the pins into the holes, grab the handle with the left hand, and put a 15 inch cresent wrench in the right hand onto the clutch nut. Pull up on the Y shaped tool handle with the pins, push down on the wrench to the left (counter clockwise) to un-screw the clutch from the pulley.
Then take the clutch off the fan after you have it out of the truck.
THEN, take the belt off, then the pulley/clutch asembly off, then the water pump (replace with a NEW - NOT REBUILT PUMP).
The new only costs 20 bucks or so more, and it is worth the headache of paying more while you have it apart. If the clutch is shot, the pump is close behind because of the vibrations ruins the seals/bearings on the pump, even though you cant hear the noise, it is there. Take the LOWER fan shroud completely off by removing the trans lines from the radiator. pull the fan out the BOTTOM of the Van. Leave the top shroud in place but take the screws out so you can manuever the lower shroud out. You also may have to remove the lower radiator hose and move it aside. Good time to change coolant anyway. And since you are in there on top, change the thermostat, while you are doing the cooling system service. Use a PREAMIUM BRAND thermostat, like a STANT, it will have a small vent hole with a valve in it hanging off the side edge of the thermostat that helps vent air from the system so it will not overheat. Trapped air can cause the cooling system to overheat, so dont put the thermostat in upside down! Point go's UP.

Drain coolant,pull radiator,fan shroud off.Need a fan tool to get that off.Need to pull ac,alt,ps and brackets off. to expose front of engine. Need crank pulley puller. Once that's done the timing cover can be removed. Hint,spring for a new timing set. loosen engine mounts and lift engine at bell-housing remove oil pan bolts.and reverse.Might as well replace oil pump if you intend to keep the van.

Is there a special tool to remove the fan from the water pump on a 2004 ram 2500 hemi?

If it has the big nut on the shaft screwed into the pump connecting the fan clutch,then there is a fan clutch tool for this at the auto parts store

How do you remvoe the radiator fan from the clutch on a 97 dodge ram pick up

To seperate the fan from the fan clutch there should be four small bolts that keep them together. Not sure thats what you are looking for but if you are trying to seperate the fanclutch from the water pump then you need a special tool to hold the pully from turning with the one hand while turning the fan clutch nut with the other they rent these tools at autozone.Once youve seperated the fan clutch from the water pump then you can take the fan off the clutch by removing the four small bolts.Please rate my assistance in helping you thank you.

the fan nut is part of the fan,you need to unscrew the nut from the water pump to remove fan,this is harder to do if you don't have the special tools to do this job Tony,

You will need a special holding wrench made by "LISLE TOOLS" or "OTC", most tools stores stock it
its fairly cheap, looks like a long thin como wrench, and might com in two pcs, one for fan clutch.

Bring it to a parts store, most will scan for engine trouble codes for free. They will plug a hand held scan tool into the vans diagnostic port (under the dash) and 'read' codes stored in the van's computer. They can tell you what the codes mean, and suggest how to fix it. How do you take fan off to get to water pump

A special fan tool is required to remove the fan from the water pump. Yes it does unscrew. One part of the tool holds the bolts of the pulley while the other part unscrews the large nut on the water pump. Tool rental is available at some auto parts stores.

How do you get the water pump and fan disconnected from each other on a 1997 Dodge Pickup truck 318 motor?

you need a special tool , a fan nut tool , it's like a 1-1/2 " ,actualy a little smaller , i use a 1-1/2" wrench and smack it with a rubber mallet , but there is a tool for it , i think checkers auto has a loan -a-tool program , but to buy it is expensive , it is normal threaded - counter clockwise is off . a special tool holds the 4 bolts on the pulley and the other part of the tool fits on the big nut . sorry i can't fix ya , cuz who has a 1-1/2" wrench or the special wrench in there home arsinal .

well if i remember correctly that fan clutch is reverse threads so in other words to loosen it you'll have to turn your wrench clockwise. they do this cuz the rotation of the fan will tighten itself onto the water pump. anyway what i do is leave the serpentine belt on the the pulleys and that will kinda hold them steady whilst you put the "special" wrench on the clutch and pop it loose you'll prolly need a cheater bar to make things easier but not too much or you'll overcome the traction of the belt and it will just slip.
