It is fairly easy to do. remove rear wheels and brake drums, remove the differential cover, rotate the diff to access the diff pin bolt and remove, remove pin, push axles inward and remove c clips, slide out axles and replace seals. reverse procedure

ok then here is the procedure  1 take off the axle nut
2 on the lower control arm you will find a large nut and bolt i belive the nut is a 21mm and the bolt side is an 18mm. this bolt is the one at the knuckle near the brakes. remove it
3 you will need to pull the knuckle out of the way or a helper to pull the knuckle out of the way so you can slip the axle out of the knuckle.( its a tight fit but there is room to slip it out.)
4 use a pry bar to pop the axle free of the diff. hosing its held in by a spring clip make sure the clip comes out with the axle if it gets stuck inside you will have to fish it out.
5 use a pry bar or screwdriver to pry seal out of housing then use a flat object that contacts the entire rim of the new seal so it can evenly be installed with out getting smashed and tap it in with a hammer. ( a good trick here is to use some grease and pack it into the new seal where the spring is this will prevent the spring from being shocked out of the seal during instalation . the spring keeps tension on the rubber in the seal so it stays tight to the shaft it is sealing.)
6 then revers the above steps. also make sure you are using the right gear lube it will most likely be 75w-140 but make sure you check your owners manual will tell you if it doesnt say on the diff cover. you can cause a lot of damage if you put in the wrong thing. and make sure  you feel the axle spring clip snap into place.
as a note there are two types of axle seals that are used on these so if the new seal looks different than the old seal then the folliowing will be important to you.the seals on these have been redesigned so if you axle has what looks like a cup or dust cover pressed onto the shaft where it goes into the diff the new style does not use this and it will prevent the axle form going in all the way so the spring clip will not lock in and you will have a leak. so you will have to remove it and install the axle without it.

Block the front tires. Break the rear lugs loose. Jack up the rear of the truck at the center if possible. remove the wheels & brake drums. Remove the brake shoes,return springs & all the other hardware. Remove the differential cover & drain oil. If you have a posi the next step sucks. You need to remove the threaded pin from the housing & remove the axle retaining clips. All the while,being carefull of the spring in the posi unit. If no posi,then same procedure,minus the "pucker factor". After the axle is out,take a large flat blade screw driver or pry bar & pop the seal out. Keep in mind the axle bearing is probably gone too , so that's another procedure. Keep it apart,you'll be glad you did.

do u mean the axle has "play" when u grab the tire and wiggle it up and down?? if it has play, then it propbably needs an AXLE SEAL AND AXLE BEARING.you will have to carefully inspect the axle itself where the bearing rides for any gouging or damage. THIS JOB requires a decent amount of mechanical skill. 1ST you need to remove the rear end COVER and drain out the gear oil into a drain pan.2ND remove the brake caliper and rotor . 3RD spin the" ring and pinion " around until u see a 5/16 bolt that passes thru from the pass. side to the drivers side. u have to remove this bolt. u will need to "hold "the gears from turning in order to break loose this bolt. 4TH remove this bolt and slide out the large metal ""PIN" that 'divides" the rear end in half. NOW CAREFULLY WITHOUT TURNING THE REAR END SPIDER GEARS,PUSH IN THE AXLE TOWARDS THE INSIDE SO U CAN REMOVE THE "C-CLIP" AT INNER END OF AXLE. now u can slide out axle and youll be able to replace seal and if needed axle bearing. let me know if u need more info.

First check if the vent cap is plugged, to do that find the T shaped object on the housing spin the top of the tee if it does not move freely then pull it off and clean it. If it's leaking out of the front seal it's the drive line seal is leaking and will have to remove the drive line put Emergency brake on and block wheels and loosen 24MM nut to get to the seal you have to pop the seal off with a screw driver and you have to replace the crush bearing when you do this. However recommend you leave that to a professional or purchase a www.alldatadiy.com susbscription for your car so you know how to set up the bearings if it is needed, you will also have to have a tork wrench to tork the nut down. You will a new Nut for the pintal shaft that comes out of the front of the axle as well the nut is nut reusable once you remove it. Another note you have to have air impact to get the nut off or a torch t heat it just enoungh to get it off but warning fuel tank is right there so if your all thumbs don't mess with it. If it's not leaking from the front seal and is leaking from the back side of the differential then you must drain the oil and replace the gasket on the rear plate, this job is not to difficult but you mus be sue you put silicone on the cover and gasket and put silicone on the bolts as you put them in because if not you will get bolt leakage, these also require a tork wrench. the front seal nut and crush bearing will cost $45.00 the rear will cost $15.00 for the silicone and gasket. And warning if the differtal is leaking from the seal it is quite possible that the bearings will need to be replaced or set up again and this takes experince or it could cost you $750.00 to rebuild the differital. hope this helps.

2000 Ford F150 rear differential fluid VANISHING


This is different. In a perfect world, you would run the truck on a dynamometer, get it up to 55 MPH and look under the truck. The fluid is going somewhere.
There is a vent tube on most axles. Follow the tube to find its' end and see if the fluid is traveling away from where you had expected a leak. Check your axle shafts under the rear rotors to see if the Emergency brake drum is oil coated.
Another way to think about this is the original failure. The pinion seal. The seal contacts the rotating flange. If you have a wobble in the driveshaft, (balance issues, U-joints) then the rotating flange can wobble. If you have a bad pinion bearing or carrier bearing, it can work to make the spline gear wobble.
So I am suggesting that the leaking Pinion seal was caused by something and the seal was a casualty of an undetermined cause.
You should be able to add an Ultra-violet dye to the axle fluid to find your leak. Even if it is running from the same place, the current leak will be showing the UV dye.

if you have a semi-floating axle ie an axle that the axle bearing is pressed on you have to remove the wheel, remove caliper if disc brakes and remove a retaining plate that holds the axle bearing in position. pull out the axle and the seal will be left in the axle housing. Replace and reverse procedures. If you have a full floating axle you have to remove the axle from the hub undo tha axle bearing nuts amnd if disc remove caliper or if drum pull the hub of the axle. The seal will be in the back of the hub as in a truck. you will need some mechanical knowledge so if you are unsure get a mechanic to advise you

Right rear wheel is leaking oil. the inside of the tire and wheel and wheel wall show oil.


Jack the vehicle up and check the brake caliper. If it isn't a seal on the caliper make sure you check the shock absorber to make sure that isn't leaking. If that is not leaking it is most likely the axle seal. Unless Ford has changed the design of that your going to have to open the rear differential, remove the retaining clip for that axle and extract it from the Axle housing. The seal is typically pressed on so it is going to be a pain to remove the old seal then press the new seal in place and re-assemble the rear end. Make sure you fill the differential with the proper fluid or you'll burn the rear end out. When your checking the caliper make sure you check the brake line for breaks and the bleed valve to make sure that is in place and not leaking.

Fluid leak from left rear axle housing


This is caused by a leaking rear axle seal you will need to pull the left rear axle out and change the seal and check for a worn axle bearing, this requires the removal of the differential cover, pin and center block or posi spring and clutch pack (if so equipped) and spider gears and then the "C" clip that retains the axle into the gear carrier, u will need a tube of silicone to reseal the cover and a axle seal installer tool and about 2 hours of your time

1994 buick roadmaster, oil leaking out of right rear axle, checked brake fluid is full, could it be differential oil leak @ end of axle??


If what you see leaking is very oily and does not evaporate, likely it is an axle seal. If there are no leaks in the brake system, that's the only thing back there that can leak. If the axle bearing is going away, it can damage the seal so make sure you look for small shiny metal flakes behind the seal when you replace it or you will be doing the job again very soon. Can't remember...that IS rear wheel drive right?

Basic to get tire and hub off, remove rear diff cover remove bolt, remove clip, pull axle out, then heavy puller to pull bearing and seal. Ck axle for wear

1993 Ford F-150 drum brake problem


It appears the rear axle shaft seal is leaking. You will need to pull the axle and replace the seal. Then check the rear end for adequate gear oil. The iron filings I am not to sure about. It sounds as if something came loose from the brakes or brake hardware and got chewed up in the drum. You will need to replace the brake shoes and maybe the brake hardware kit. Always change the shoes or pads on both sides when working on brakes, rear or front. If the inside of the drum is not perfectly smooth it will need to be turned or replaced. If this were brake fluid leaking from the wheel cylinder the master cylinder would be low on fluid and your brake pedal would go down much further than normal.

You are correct, it's not brake fluid. Check the level in your rear axle, it sounds like you have bad seals in the axles allowing the rear differential gear oil to leak inside the brake drums.
This is a heavy weight oil, 80 or 90 weight. This leakage will ruin your brake pads, and if enough leaks out, your rear differential will blow. The seals aren't expensive, but it's a lot of labor to pull everything apart to get at the seals, plus new rear brakes. My Ford ( and I'm sure your GMC) require removal of the rear axles to change the seals. Good Luck! countrycurt0
