I have something similar to my lumina not starting only sometimes when I turn the key. I thought it was my neutral safety switch, but I have been told that the problem is something that is in my steering column, but not the ignition key switch itself. Anything

It could be that the steering wheel is in a bind and in the locked position.Try turning the key while aggressively turning /shaking the steering wheel.

How to replace and refit the ignition on a chevrolet silverado

If you need to remove the ignition on a chevrolet silverado then just follow the instructions below.
You will also need the following tool unless you can make something similar.
The tool is: J 42759 ignition switch connector release tool.

Removal procedure:

1. disconect the negative battery lead
2. disable the SIR system Zone 3( you will need to check how to do this as it varies from each year of production.
3. remove the hush and knee bolster (instrument gauges and console)
( you may find away around doing the work above but just take your time ok)
4. remove the steering column trim covers
5. with the key in ignition turn the key to the RUN possition
6. install an allen wrench into the hole on top if the lock cylinder. Push down onto the wrench to release the tab on the lock cylinder inside the cylinder housing
7. slide the lock cylinder out of the cylinder housing.
8. disconnect the passlock and key buzzer from the lock cylinder housing
9. insert tool J 42759 into the lock cylinder housing to release the tabs on the ignition switch.
10. pull the ignition switch out of the lock cylinder housing.
11. disconnect the connector from the ignition switch.

Now for the installation procedure.
To install the ignition then follow the instructions below:

1. the gears between the ignition switch and the lock cylinder must be in the correct position, failure to do this will cause the gears to be out of line in the ignition switch and lock cylinder housing witch would result in a no start of engine or even drain the battery, so make sure you get this part right.
2. you need to make sure the gears are lined up correctly if not it wont work correctly if it is wrong you need to turn the gear in the ignition switch until it is in the correct possition
3. use a screwdriver to rotate the lock cylinder housing gear counter clockwise until it hits a stop.
4. connect the ignition switch connector
5. insert the ignition switch into the lock cylinder housing, the tabs on the ignition switch must be lined up correctly in the lock cylinder, make sure this is correct.
6. use a screwdriver to rotate the lock cylinder housing gear clockwise to the start position - allowing it to spring return on its own into the run position, if it dont do this then the chances are you have the lock in the housing the wrong way or gears not set correct.
7. align the lock cylinder and then install the lock cylinder into the lock cylinder housing.
8. connect the pass lock and key buzzer into the lock housing.
9. install the steering column trim covers.
10 install the hush and knee bolster.
11 enable the SIR system
12 connect the negative battery cable
13 try the ignition and make sure it works as it should do

If you are unsure of what is being talked about above then you should either leave this job to a pro or go and get a workshop manual as getting this wrong could result in the car not starting or the battery being drained, either way it would mean you have to do the work all over again

Inspect the old ignition cycle which is out.Is there any problem noticed of Ignition cylinder getting worn out.
Because when issue of ignition not turning off,its faulty ignition lock cylinder or faulty ignition switch.I suggest re-inspect the new ignition cylinder.

1997 taurus key won't turn in the ignition, gear selector won't go into gears

Usually a sign the tumblers in the lock cylinder have worn out or jammed.
You may have to get the lock cylinder drilled out and replaced.

Steering wheel won't lock, key won't come out

If the ignition normally only locks with the vehicle in park position, then check the switch on the gear lever mechanism is working.
If not, then you'll have to jiggle and wiggle that key out or replace the ignition lock.

Car was working fine i parked outside my house then retired for the night i came out the next afternoon and it will not start

Sometimes the car won’t start because the wheel is turned the wrong way. Try turning the wheel and then trying it again. Check that the car is in park. If it was shut off in gear, it won’t start. Next, make sure the car isn’t out of gas.
Check whether the tires are stuck up against a curb or something. If so, turn the steering wheel firmly to the right or try to get out and physically move the car a bit and it should start. Do you have the clutch pedal down if it’s a standard? Or, if you have an antitheft device, check to see if that’s allright. Check your distributor cap for moisture. If you recently ran through a deep puddle, a damp or wet distributor cap will keep the car from starting. If there are cracks in it, replace it.
If you cant turn the car key then this is probably due to an antitheft gizmo that turns on when you shut off the car. Just wiggle the steering wheel a little and then try. If that doesn’t do it, turn the wheel as far to one side as you can and try again. This should get it going.
However if the battery’s good but the car still won’t turn over you may have a bad ignition switch. Try this test. Turn the key to ON (not start) and see in the warning lights are working. If they don’t and the battery connections are clean you have a bad ignition switch. If it's the ignition switch you probably will have to take it in to the garage.
Call for service if you’ve checked out all of the above things because the other possibilities will require a little more technical skill to discover.

My husband turned off our Chevy Trailblazer without putting it in gear and now it won''t start and the gear shift is lock up. What do you do to fix it????

first make sure battery isn't dead because if he cut it off in gear then the switch couldn't cut the power off and it'll run the battery down and there is a electrical solenoid that allows the shifter to move if theres no voltage than the shifter want go into park and the ignition switch want turn off.
