1990 Cadillac cruise control quits then comes back (not blowing fuse)

When the Cruise Control switch is turned on (Light is on) Everything will work for long periods then fail even the light goes off (like a blown fuse) after a while the light comes back on and cruise can be set again. Then it will repeatedly fail. Turning the switch on/off does nothing to help. You just wait and it comes back on eventually. In the past I've had the fuse blow (which takes out the digital dash as well) this has not happened during this latest issue. (Also I have a rear window motor that when the window is all the way up the motor clicks like a plastic gear is jumping) Is a new motor needed? Is there directions/video on how to replace the Opera Light Lamp? Thank you

SOURCE: how to fix the cruise control - won't hold speed

It is vacuum operated. It may currently be disconnected from the carburetor'throttle body linkage.

On the off chance it is connected, it likely has a hole in the diaphragm. So it may be disconnected at the vacuum line to the intake manifold.

There is also a vacuum dump switch which might be stuck open, damaged, or just out of adjustment which is normally pinched off until the brakes are applied and the switch is supposed to dump within the first inch of travel of the pedal. This is a mechanical override of the cruies control, and the brake light energy is supposed to release the control when the brake lights are energized.

There is also a magnet and sensor down either on the transmission speedometer gear housing, where it enters the transmission or on the driveshaft. If the magenr is not there, there is no speed pulse reference for the control to operate from. So it has no reference it can maintain.

It is not a sophisticated system, and it is prone to leaks after 23/24 years.

You can hear the dump valve if it is open, you can hear and see the diaphragm on the cruise control to see or hear if it is damaged when the hood is open. With the right meter, you can ascertain if the magnet is still present in the spot it is supposed to be once you locate the connector for the sensor- it is a hall effect switch usually.

You already know the electrical portion of the system works, so the problem is largely isolated to a vacuum leak or a sensor of unit is still connected. Normally the vacuum unit sits on the inner fender on either side.and the control cable arcs over to the transmission linkage side of the carburator or throttle body, it has one wiring harness connector and one vacuum connection and the cable to the carb, and usually only 2 bolts holding it down.

A wrecking yard might be a source for a good unit used, New old stock may still be in the system although likely aftermarket with the nationalization of GM.

SOURCE: cruise control is inoperative

It can be faulty cruise control switch. If the switch is replaced, then it can be wiring issue or faulty cruise control board. But as the switch is replaced, get the voltage at the switch tested to confirm the switch is actually receiving voltage. If no voltage received at switch power supply wire then, apply external 12 volt power to the cruise control switch wire and then see if cruise control comes ON. If yes, then you know wiring is issue.

Where are fuses for cruise control

If cruise control main light comes on but you cannot set a speed (no set), you could have a bad brake pedal switch.
(If the cruise control light comes on, chances are that it is NOT a fuse issue).
Some vehicles have two switches (one for brake lights and one for cruise control cancel) and others have a multifunctional, single switch.
The function to cancel cruise control is very sensitive so it only takes a small movement of the pedal to cancel cruise control.
You can try lifting on the brake pedal while trying to set the cruise, but this does not alway work. Replace switches are pretty cheap (less than $30) and pretty easy and quick to replace.

CRUISE CONTROL WON'T WORK ON 2005 CHEVY TRAILBLAZER

check cruise control fuse and check the brake lights see if brake light working because the brake light switch will deactivate cruise control when brakes is applied.if brake lights dont work either fuse blowed or switch bad.if all is good have vechicle code scan because cruise control control by PCM and vechicle speed sensor and thottle actuator control motor.

My cruise control doesnt work. could it b a fuse out?

CRUISE CONTROL PROBLEMS CAN BE CAUSED BY FUSE OR FAULTY BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH OR BLOWED FUSE TO BRAKE SWITCH.YOUR CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH COULD BE FAULTY.BEST TO TAKE CAR TO DEALERSHIP LET THEM HOOK CAR. TO DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT.BECAUSE CRUISE CONTROL IS ELECTRONIC AND PCM CONTROL.THE CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM USES INPUTS FROM VSS SENSOR .SO IT WOULD BE HARD TO FIX AT HOME YOU NEED EQUIPMENT TO FIX AND TROUBLE SHOOT.

Cruise control quit working. Is there a fuse somewhere that I can check. None of the fuse box locations have a cruise control label

Bad relay. They are to the right of the fuses (fuses inside the car). You can see the relays if you open the cover to the fuses (they are big blue cubes), but will need to remove a few screws to remove the panel to get to them. I can't remember which one it is, it might make a clicking noise when you try and turn on the cruise. Or you can swap "matching relays - compare diagram on top" and see what else stop working. I had to replace several, my dash when out, my cruise, and I think one is the fan that blows your ac and heat.
