It could possibly if the belts don't line up for sure that can cause many problems, it shouldn't shred or wear unless its being rubbed against something. Can you see where that might be happening, if not if the Newer alternator is not the same or OEM type replacement the spacing on its wheel (pulley) might be too big allowing your belt to jump around, different cars use different belts and this new alternator might have too big of a gap as it might be meant for a different car. Check the part numbers and call the company the alternator is from, eg. ACDelco use their part number call and ask which years make and model that alternator is designed for. If there is an actual problem with the alternator and something is loose letting the belt bounce around return it if possbile. Check your new idle puley, check the belt's tension, there might be too much play and things much be getting hit and coming off posbily getting ruined or shredded in your case, look into seeing if the part is correct for your car as a newer model might not be what you need.

Also, if the alternator is really not the same and all the pulley's are not lining up this could be a very good indication why the belt is shredding a si said before. Try putting the old belt on in a way so you can see where it stays and lines up. Do not turn on the car as you need a belt to run it and wihtout one youcan cause damage, just look to see if there's friction between something which would give you this problem. Good luck! :)

I have a 1992 Ford Bronco with a 5.0 Motor. I just purchased it about a month ago. The alternator went out on it and was just put in before I recieved the truck. I went to the store to purchase a new one...

go back to the auto parts store and ask to see one from a 1987-1991,its possible being a 1992 (which techically was built in 1991) was built with older design parts like the brackets and alternator.Keep in mine, anything older than a 87 would have had a "V" type belt system and anything newer would have a SERPENTINE belt-which is a wide flat belt that goes around all the pulleys

My 97 miata has been having terrible squeaking noises coming from alternator belt area. put new belt on and still squealed then snapped off!!! Put another new one on less tight and the pulley for the...

The alternator is loading up too much for some reason.
Had the same issue on my friend's 2001 Mazda Protege. Turned out the voltage regulator in the alternator was faulty. Had the alternator rebuilt. A week later, it acted up again! There is apparently another issue, but I have not been able to figure it out.
Unfortunately, I don't have a clear answer for you, but, one's thing's for sure. Mazda has to stop using crappy Ford electrics in their cars.

The alternator belt came off while driving. then smoke was coming out from the hood.

you do not want to turn your car on if there is no belt! Before you put a new belt on, make sure the balancer pulley is not crooked or out of place, make sure alternator is on tight and other pulleys are not loose, and that there is nothing that would touch the belt if it is rotating. you might have done some damage to your car if you had it on with no belt. Check anti freeze level and temparatue after new belt.

Smoke, smoke, smoke and alternator/fan belt shredded

If 1994 Suzuki equip with air condition then please check the A/C compressor clutch.

The compress clutch can lock up on a defect ai/c pump and cause the belt to smoke.

Please check for a fail a/c pump first and get back to me.

An fair A/C pump can be bypass via an a/c pump bypass pulley (as picture below)

How to replace belt tension pulley for dodge neon 2002

The power steering and A/C belt is tensioned by a tensioner pulley. Mine went bad and was "screaming" I thought it was the power steering pump and I replaced it only to find that it wasn't the problem. I couldn't find any bolts and deemed it too much of a problem for me to replace at home. The shop had to drop the engine and transaxle assembly from the engine bay in order to get enough room to replace the pulley. The problem with many FWD cars is having enough room to work so if you have to replace it, the engine has to move because you only have about two inches of room otherwise.
