Speedometer Gauge Slipping - Inaccurate Reading

My Hyundai Elantra 2000 GLS Speedometer Gauge is Slipping!

The colder the weather the worst the slippage!

There is a loud grinding scraping noise when this happens.

Under 25mph - 30 mph it reads accurate.

Over 30mph - 40 mph it starts to slip more and more the faster I go.
45mph to 55 to 65 to 85 to 100 mph to even 110 mph when I'm doing less than 50 mph!

The speedometer reading is not inaccurate when the engine warms up but I'm afraid, because of the loud noise, it will wear out, not work and have to be replaced again!

The speedometer has been replace once already.

Any Ideas?

I went to my mechanic and he said it might help to grease the cable.

He also said since the mph races real high it's probably in the speedometer gauage area instead of at the transmission.

Once it warms up it works great!

I had a car that did this to me. It started happening last year so I took it in and they were baffled. Lesson learned never take a car to a big chain store for a difficult diagnosis. They just told me to let my car warm up for 5 minutes and it would be fine. If I let it warm up it was good. This winter it started doing it again but it would do it all the time even after I let it warm up. I never bothered bringing it in again because it was dieing. If you are truly concerned take it into a mechanic ( a good one) and have them diagnose it. Your spedometer cable could just be wearing out.

I think that your elantra 2000 model doesn't have a speedometre snsr if so, you can remove your speed metre gear from your transmission and ckecked for damage if its ok you rotate the cable and let some one to check the response on gauge .some time the cable is damage from gauge side causing inapropriate fixation.

2000 Elantra GLS with PO 732 and PO 734 codes. Any hope of a repair without a complete tranny rebuild?

2nd and 4th gear ratio codes. No matter the cause, the transmission has to be pulled. Low end at a garage is $1000, top end $2500+.

What does the trac off light on a hundai elantramean

Your car has disabled the traction control for some reason. Common reasons include

-tires spinning on ice or snow
-slipping clutch or transmission
-misfiring engine
-car is grumpy

Traction control is sort of the opposite of antilock brakes. When you push on the gas, it cuts back power to the wheels if they lose their grip.

Clutch Sometimes Slipping in 4th and 5th gears!

Hi Jackiaria

Unfortunately you have a hydraulic clutch, which is self adjusting on your car.

The problem you are experiencing is the excessive wear to your clutch, or oil contamination on the clutch plate.

Both these problems can only be fully diagnosed once the gearbox is removed and the clutch is inspected.
There is also a possibility of excessive wear, or scoring, on the flywheel surface, the longer you drive the vehicle with a slipping clutch, possibly requiring the flywheel to be skimmed.

Shop around for a best price, and a trustworthy garage !

Good Luck !

A FixYa rating would be Nice....Thanks.....John.

2000 Hyundai Elantra Transmission problem

I don't know if I can help but as an owner of a Hyundai Elantra 2000 GLS with 205,000 miles and the original clutch and transmission I'll try and help!

I always start with the lowest cost solution first and avoid mechanics as much as possible!

Have you checked the trans fluid?
It should be changed every 30,000 miles!
Sometimes a Lucas Trans Fluid will cure - fix slippage!

Have you checked for a clutch adjustmet!
An adjustment can cure - fix slippage!

Are you a clutch rider with your foot always on the clutch?
If so you may have worn out the clutch!

How many miles to you have on your Hyundai Elantra 2000?
