You may need a GOOD new thermostat. I had the same problem twice on my first generation Dakota. The problem for me turned out to be the DODGE thermostat I used to replace the old Dodge part. I went and got a Stant brand from local auto parts store using the standard temperature spec and quit shivering the next time I drove it. I don't know if your engine is a Dodge or Chrysler engine, but it sounds like the same thing.

Ah - good point to start with the basics... I saw this problem a few times so I will include this tip with similar problems. I am glad you got fixed up. Driving around cold is miserable.

My 2004 Jeep Cheokee loredo is running hot. Could

Could be several things,

1. thermostat
2. water pump
3. fan motor is bad (is the fan running when at temp?)
4. fan motor relay

Is it running hot all the time or just when setting idle?

The heating doesn't warm air

The mixing valve is inside. You can follow the heater hoses back to the firewall to get a idea of where it is located. You can also go to the parts store and have them show you what the part looks like. The heater hoses will be two different sizes so mixing them up would be hard to do.

My jeep grand cherokee started overheating at idle

try the water pump - first - make sure the radiator is really full - take the cap off cold and fill - if it looks full - start and run 8 minutes or so - then fill it up - look at ur fan belt - is it tight - tight is about how much pressure u use to make a firm hand shake with little movement - any movement over about an inch is loose - when the jeep warms up the belt can slip and not even make a noise - - new materials don't always squeal. - then be sure ur water pump is ok - they go slowing - the fins wear down - one more thing is the radiator - u don't say how many miles or what maintenance schedules you have or not so that's it for now
