1999 Taurus automatic transmission problem

Have a look under your car at the shift linkages to the gear box and ensure that they are still connected. If they are and they move when the shift is moved in the car, then you probably need a specialist auto transmission mechanic.

check your saftey switch located on the lower side of the steeriing column.

It can be issue with gears or problem with transmission and needs to be rebuilt. Also get the ****** fluid checked. If it's low, then such problems occurs.

The shifter needs to be inspected. If The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

Reverse is not "synchronized" forward gears are, so it does make some noise, try shifting to 2nd before engaging reverse to slow gear rotation and limit gear clash or grind.

It could be the linkage from the shifting lever to the tranns. This linkage isn't very expensive to have replaced and your shop can tell you if it is indeed the linkage or not.
