Question about 1997 Volkswagen Golf
So basically a summary is...
2nd and 4th gear don't go into gear, I almost have to ram it into gear, and even then it still slips out every once and awhile.
I was thinking it's the clutch, but I've had multiple people tell me that if it was the clutch it would do it with all the gears, and it would actually GO into gear, it would just slip out.
So then I think maybe it's in the linkage, I take it to a garage today(Very reliable, one of my good friends) and we fool around with the linkage, and he said that he tried to push the lever over and even then it didn't go into gear without struggling.
Then he said proceeded to say that if he pushes the lever all the way over, and it still has problems, then it could very well be in the tranny.
That's also what another friend of mine said. And I guess Volkswagen's are reputable for their trannys going, because I had a couple people tell me that in the past.
Could it be that the gears are just maybe frozen? Although, also when I put it in 4th(or attempt to), I hear a rattling noise
Soo, what do you think it could be?
It sounds like the syncronizers are out on the transmission

If it was the clutch it would act up in all gears, so those other people are right, there are a couple of things that can cause this, one is worn sychro cones, these are the parts that allow the gears to engage smoothly by allowing them to spin free while they are unloaded, the other would be excessive wear in he shift linkage , this is usually caused by worn rod end bushings, and is only common in cars with very high miles, over 100,000. Check the shift bushings 1st.
