Question about 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix

1 Answer

Security/Cold? This is the 2nd time now this has happened....on a very cold MN morning, my car starts - runs just fine. When I want to start it again, the security system acts like I stole the car, and shuts down when I start it. The computer needed to be reset by a mechanic last time, I'm just wondering if it could be easy enough for me to reset? Also - I do not have a keyless fab - I lock and unlock it with my 1 key. I have also had this issue this week, so has a co-worker who also has a Grand Prix. We are in MN also. The dealer I spoke with said he has had a handful of customers with this issue on other GP's. So far I've been told it is either the BCM, the theft deterent module and/or the harness to that or possibly the ignition lock mechanism. I was able to override this issue to at least make the car drivable, basically you need to make the car relearn the key. It won't fix it but you can at least drive it to the dealer for a fix rather than pay for a tow. Instructions: Hook some jumper cables up between your car up & another running vehicle, turn the car over. Let it stall, do not touch the key, leave it in the on position and walk away for at least 12 minutes. Come back, remove the key for at least 30 seconds, reinsert and turn the car over. It will stall again, repeat these steps 3 times. The car will start and run on the 3rd attempt. Do not unhook the jumper cables until the car runs on its own! Take it to the dealer and let them hook up the tech-2 scanner to it. You are looking at 1 of the above mentioned issues. Probably going to run us $3-400 =(

Motor starts then dies several times when cold

Sounds like the cold start solenoid. It is designed to keep the engine running at a set RPM until it reaches a specific engine temp.

2.0d x-type 2005 Est. Starting problems when engine is warm

Ok, time for car school. The vehicle is operated by the computer, every electrical concept that is. When the engine is cold, it starts fine because the computer has placed it in "cold start mode", putting more fuel into the engine than normally would until Once the engine is warmed up, a temperature sending unit or temp sensor tells the computer to change to normal run mode. IF said temp sensor is faulty and is not telling the computer to make said change, it stays in cold start mode, still dumping excess fuel in the engine that is now not required, cause it's warmed up. Like keeping the choke closed on older vehicles. Now I think you can answer your own question, when this no start action is happening after warm up and it always starts fine when cold, what's the first thing you check ? Right, the unsuspected temp sensor. Change that and no more start problem. Have a wonderful day. Glad I could be of service.

Car starts poorly during cold mornings. The idle

Sounds like a cold start valve (which is actually an additional injector in the intake to assist in cold starting) If you can get it to your local prts store while the light is on they will read the codes for free and tell you what the car thinks is amiss.

Truck runs rough at start-up in the mornings

If this happens only when the engine is cold or cool, I would suspect a coolant temperature senor that has lost its calibration.
One way to check would be to have the engine controller scanned when the engine is cool then cold.
The coolant temperature should be the same as the intake air temperature. If the readings are not close to one another, change the coolant sensor.
The coolant temp sensor controls the fuel mixture when the engine is cold, normal or hot.
Good luck, let me know.

Service Engine Soon Light comes on but doesn not stay on.

If your battery starts turns the engine over, it is doing it's job well. It sounds like your engine computer is not liking the cold engine. If it has been a while since a tune up, it would not hurt to go ahead and do it, but if it runs ok after it warms up, I sould not worry about it a whole lot. When the engine is cold, the egr valve and other things that are made to limit polution tend to stick and give the computer bad readings. A serious tune up may fix it, and I think should, but you MAY still be in the same boat! That does not FIX it for you, but should ease your mind on the light.
