The bmw 3 series can be a great car but it can also be a real problem . most bmw cars do not make it to 150,000 in the USA most are traded in and are exported out of the country . the reason is that labor in the US is costly and repair shops here that CAN AND WILL work on a bmw will charge 100.00 an hour or more to work on it ...... so understand you will need to budget 2000.00 to 4000.00 a year to do the required repairs and up keep to keep that car running correctly ....... on the other hand if you can do the work yourself a bmw is not that bad to work on ........good luck

I just did spark plugs wires and oil change on my 97 Ford Explorer why is it still puttering in missing and Poppin like backfiring

Hello Jamie Hill,

After we (amateur-enthusiast) seasoned mechanics are truly stumped... there is typically one MORE stone needing to be turned:

- Exhaust Baffling... or diffuser plates inside the muffler or catalytic converter respectively... I have had both (First big clue: engine did not run... did, didn't)...

If EXHAUST cannot get out... combustible AIR cannot get in
and mine started with a big intermittent power loss... and ended with a SOLID won't start (drama: 180 miles from home (alone)).

Fortunately there are REALLY nice people in Clovis, Ca.

This is a bit much... and perhaps your friendly mechanic
/ muffler shop has a better idea.

BUT YES... BACK-FIRING definitely an symptom...!!

Mine solution: to loosen the exhaust at the bottom of the manifold... or the top of the catalytic converter & see if that changes anything.

Soak it up really good with liquid wrench... first... and do not allow the engine to run/warm-up if it does start in such a dangerous/precarious configuration.

Failing that... its back [again] to basics... air, fuel, fire.... check that timing chain/gear
(Atwater, Ca. 111 miles from home (of course))...

Timing gear backfires less... but can certainly fit the bill...no/yes?

Happy hunting!

Is the maintenance on a 2001 bmw x5 expensive?

Hello. It is always impossible to predict when a serious problem may arise but I find that older high end vehicles often cost little to maintain when they have less than 150,000 miles on them. J.

I don't think they have a service interval. They usually last a long time. I would guess 150,000 to 175,000 miles. Or about 250,000 km
