Question about 1996 Volkswagen Golf

1 Answer

Gas fumes only in cold weather

My 1996 VW Golf Gl smells of gasoline in the cold weather. Cannot see gas leaking but the fumes are almost overwhelming. This only happens in the very cold weather. 40 degrees or lower. Please help me understand what is going on and what I should do. The car was manufactured for Canada and it now resides with me in Florida. During the summer months there is no odor.
Thank you,
Kelly

Gasoline or exhaust fumes? If exhaust, you have a leak. If gasoline smell, tank may be over full and vent may be clogged.

After cold weather starts I smell gas or exhaust?

Probably gasoline. Nissan vehicles are known to have leaking fuel hoses in very cold weather. Check around the intake for fuel leaks.

I'm smelling gas fumes when my car is running

Inspect your car immediately. Leaking gasoline is a fire hazard, especially check the seals on the fuel injectors.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I smell gas fumes from the front of my 73 super beetle

You may have a fuel leak. Gas evaporates at a quicker rate then water so you may not actually have a puddle. Check the fuel line for cracks. The old fuel lines can degrade with age and extreme weather (hot or cold).

I am smelling gas but see no gas leaking

Is your check engine light on? Fumes rise, so if the leak is in the top of the tank or the filler neck, this would allow the fumes to escape, smelling of gas, and tripping your check engine light.

Gas Smell

check under hood while it is running to see if there is gasoline dripping anywhere. You need to find it before it catches on fire. Use a bright flashlight and look at the fuel injectors and loser intake manifold as injector o-ring could be leaking. DO NOT use a lighter. Sorry, but I had to stress this. Gasoline does not burn. The fumes burn.

Gas fumes inside and out side the car when it is hot outside

Try having the area that the hose was disconnected from steamed cleaned, or go to a car wash wash and spray the area. It might help, that is if you already haven't done so.
