Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

2 Answers

Jeeps electrical system is completely dead.

This is a1998 Grand Cherokee with a 4.0 L engine. Car will not start even with a jump start. When I open the door the dome light doesn't light and I here a clicking noise either coming from the dash or engine compartment. Any ideas what this clicking noise is?

Sounds like you have a bunt out fusable link,,,its a piece of wire that acts like a fuse,,only most of the time,,when its gone you cant see it,,you have to use an electrical tester to find the problem.

How do I check the firing system on a 2000 jeep grand cherokee?

no engine stated. so... we can not guess this?
so must answer in pure generic way, (gas or diesel)?
i toss dice land gas, 4.0L
the jeeps since 1993 all have this thing called ASD
anytime any jeep stalls (GASoline/petrol) we first watch this relay.
ever get a tuneup this decade .
check all fuses yet, ?
if the drops out, the engine just stall. (it kills all EFI dead)
i just watch it as i crank( yes 2 persons)
then if it drops out or is dead, we next
SCAN it. if you have no scan tool this can be near impossible to fix any car made. (modern with EFI)

http://www.fixkick.com/Jeeps/ASD.html

if no scan tool?this might work but be for warned this way sucks
it sucks because it likes to clear the vary code you want to see.

To read OBD flash DTC codes, you do this.
models - 93+ (my 2008 works JK)

Start with the ignition off. Within five seconds, switch the key on, off, on, off, on. ("On" is NOT "Start" and "Off" is NOT "Lock").

The "check engine" light will flash. (codes)
Count the flashes. Each code is a two digit code, for example,23 would be FLASH FLASH (pause) FLASH FLASH FLASH (long pause). It may flash out up to 9 codes.

Where is a1998 purge valve location

old post.
post shows 1998 and 2002, why?

its in the FSM shop manual
posted, 100s of times.
here it is, one more. time./;
read the chapters on EVAP.
is the Gas cap LOOSE or bad>? be easy check no>?

lacking a clear year, makes this hard.
1998 is WJ
and is here
chapter 13 for a start. on all jeeps made , chapter 13

scan the PCM yet, get the DTC errors after reset and a working gas cap, tight? (my new jeep even sends to screen gas cap loose") not yours.

Grand Cherokee stalls when parked in idle or starting through intersection?

I would suggest a fuel pressure test to see if you are getting enough fuel to the engine. If not, then you either have a plugged fuel filter or a failing fuel pump. If you have adequate pressure then something is going on with the fuel injectors.

07 cherokee wont start

which engine option? 4 Liter>
fuses good?
does it crank robustly? full cranking speed, not slow and weak.
does it have spark ?
does spark last for more that 2 seconds cranking
does the ASD drop out cranking> (big clue there)
if it has spark and ASD holds, then try test fuel, does test fuel start
car , even if only for the magic 2 seconds jeep rule>>????

if ASD drops.? OUT.

cheers and good luck,
tell more, get more, even detailed tests to find real cause.

1994 jeep cherokee (5spd) wont start

Yah sure check the fuel pressure on the manifold, ur belt tension and altenator. But a very common problem with jeeps is the crankshaft positioning sensor. Check and make sure ur gettin fire. If ur not could also b the ignition control module in the distribitor.

Heat not working

If jeep is a limited model it has automatic temp control for the heater blend door, it is controled by a electric motor, and can be problematic with age, sometimes it makes a clicking noise when the blend door is stiff ,which then it must be lubed and freed up
