Question about 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

Whenever i start up my jeep, it is very hard to start. usually when it is cold, it almost seems to flood the engine, as i smell gas. the fuel pump had been replaced about 6 months ago. to get it to start i sometimes have to press the gas pedal all the way to the floor and hold it there while starting the engine.the jeep then shudders while trying to turn over and i have to hold the key on the whole time while it is trying to catch.

Your engine is getting way to much fuel,,,you need to have the pressure regulator checked for proper function,,also the TPS sensor

It sounds like the fuel pump pressure is leaking down after seeing this cause long crank times and all the symptoms you describe, and yes you will smell gas, which seems like a rich condition but isn't. Have a shop run a test called a "Fuel pressure leak down test", it takes about 30 minutes to run.

Mty truck has difficulty starting when warm and is accompanied by a fuel odor. I recently replaced the fuel pump and have had this problem since.

if has a fuel odor. it may be the fuel pressure regulator thats bad, it may be flooding out engine. a leaking regulator can cause hard starting, poor fuel economy, stalling, check engine light, gas smell under hood.

My 2001 Dodge Dakota is using too much gas.

Are you getting a check engine light? It could be one of the sensors or the fuel pressure regulator. Example: If the coolant sensor is bad and it's tell the computer that engine is cold, the computer will richen the fuel mixture. The O2 sensor sniffs the exhaust if it doesn't like what it smells it might richen the mixture and so on. If the fuel pressure regulator is bad the engine will usually be flooded when you go to start it "hot". Does it start hard when hot, do you have to hold the gas pedal down to get it started when it's hot? If so, it's most likely the fuel pressure regulator. I'm assuming the truck is in good tune, clean air cleaner, spark plugs are good, stuff like that.

The first thing I would do since you think it was flooded is to replace the sparkplugs, sometimes if a spark plug has been washed out with gas you cannot get it completely dried out. After you replace sparkplugs try to start the engine. If the engine starts I would still recommend that you change your oil because of fuel saturation. If your engine fails to start I would suspect that you have a bad crankshaft position sensor as it is known to give problems. The crankshaft position sensor is located on the top of the transmission bell housing on the drivers side.

Jeep needs to crank twice to start + rich gas smells once started

That code PO455 is indicating that you have a fuel vapor leak somewhere in the system. I'd check from purge canister back taking a close look at all the vapor hose to the tank. If all that check out, purge solenoid & canister would be my next area to check. That's probably what your smelling , so it might be easier than you think to sniff out the source.

454 ci gm turns over hard backfires timing ok acts flooded

Check fuel pressure, and regulator. A leaking regulator gives a warm engine more fuel [ it does not like it] a cold motor does. same as a flooded motor. Good luck
