Question about 2004 Nissan Sentra
This is caused by the cut-off switch on the transmission being out of adjustment. This switch is
to prevent the car starting unless it is in PARK or NEUTRAL.
You will have to adjust it so it works only when the gear shift is in those positions only.

Try loosening the shift cable at the transmission. Then wiggle the linkage and make sure the gear selector is in park, and tighten the cable. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
