What is ABS?

It's the Antilock Braking System.

Cars which have it run a system diagnostic at engine start, the light should come on and then extinguish within a second or two. If the light stays on then the ABS has a fault and is disabled.

You need to get the fault codes read to narrow down the likely cause. It could be as simple as a loose wire connection or corroded connection, or one or more components have failed such as a wheel sensor or the ABS pump motor.

I hope that my answer has been of assistance, if so then please take a moment to rate my reply.

Why would my antilock & traction off light keep coming on and what should I do?

THE ABS AND TRAC LIGHT COMES ON MEANS YOU HAVE A PROBLEM. THE GARAGE OR DEALERSHIP HAS TO DO A DIAGNOSTIC SCAN ON ABS BRAKE AND ANTI LOCK SYSTEM TO SEE WHAT TROUBLE CODES COMING UP AND FIX THE PROBLEM.

I have a warning light on my dash saying there is a problem with the ABS system. Is this a safety problem?

not really. Measn that you most likely have a wheel speed sensor bad. Most often its in the front of the truck and its replaced with the wheel bearing. Although the system is disabled while the light is on the vehicle brakes are not affected

Anti lock light , what id mean

The antilock brake system light will go on (ABS) if the sensor in one of the wheels does not detect the correct speed which is essential for the antilock braking system to work properly.

Anti lock lite stays on how to correct it

when anti lock light is on the system goes into disable mode.Go to any repair shop where they can pull code's or better yet go to autozone they will do it for free, I have found that 9 out of 10 time's it's going to be wheel speed sensor to your A.B.S system, good luck, hope this was very helpful.

Why do my anti lock breaks engage on my 1998 tahoe everytime?

either your antilock brake sensor is not working properly or your switch behind your foot brake is not working properly.

My antilock light keeps coming on and i couldn't pass smog because of my back breaks but the pads looke good what should i do

It is probably the antilock system itself which is computer controlled. You can just pull the fuse and not use the anit-locks.

Anti-lock n AWD

Call the dealership. I seem to remember that Pontiac had a recall for this problem just recently where the antilock brake system would lock op and the system caused people to get into accidents. This is a manufacture defect

Antilock brake /trac off light stays on...140000 miles

In those cars, the wheel speed sensor is integrated into the wheel bearings. When one of the sensors goes bad, you have to replace the entire wheel bearing. Also, when the sensor(s) go bad, it will cause the loss of anti-lock braking and disable the traction control system.

The only way to identify which wheel bearing it is, is to hook the car up to a scan tool capable of reading ABS codes. That said, the front ones are more notorious for going out than the rear ones.
