Power Steering problem when stationary or going slow Defender 90
Defender td5 52 plate When turning the wheel there is a jerking and juddering even when wheels are off floor when going round corners it will stick and have to pull it back i have bled steering fluid for air every thing seems ok under nieth ...belt seems ok and not slipping is it the pas box or pas pump how can i rule one out with out having to go to the expence of buying the wrong bit ..urgent advise needed asap

If the power steering pump were going bad you'd get a whining noise when turning at slow speeds. You'll also find it hard to turn the wheel. A slipping belt will give you the same indications. Now if the lock pin is engaging the lock plate while you're in motion that would indicate a loose pin.
No it should not cause any strain on the torque converter, however by doing so while idling the power steering system has less oil pressure due to resistance and will make an odd sound and may slow down your idle more.
No nothing would be affected in turning the steering wheel while you are stopped holding the brake.The straining you here is just the power steering pump doing it's job which as you know is run off the engine slowing it down a bit under pressure.

What made you suspect there was air in there to begin with? Air only gets in if fluid has leaked out, and a leak is a serious matter. Follow the instructions in your vehicle handbook and check the power steering fluid level. "The car is fairly new, only about 8 months old."
So it's still under warranty. Don't waste time with this if there's evidence of a potential problem, get the dealer to check any faults.

It won't have done the tyres any favours, but you'd be unlucky if you've done this on one occasion and suffered damage to anything else. Regular stationary steering causes excessive tyre wear and can delaminate the tread blocks from the tyre carcase.

Ummm, no. Not unless they were taught to drive by an idiot or have picked up bad habits since then. There's a vast difference between steering when the wheels are moving, even at the very slow speeds involved during parallel parking, and stationary steering.

Nothing has happened to your car, has it? Otherwise I'm sure that you'd have mentioned it. So stop panicking and don't worry. Don't do it again and treat what your friend says with caution in future.

Sounds like you have air in your steering system. I would start by looking for any leaks on your steering system like hose to fitting crimps, steering pump, etc. Check your steering fluid level to make sure it is full and also look for bubbles on the dip stick. If everything looks good, start the vehicle and turn the wheels all of the way to the left and then to the right. Do this while the vehicle is in park and repeat at least 5 times. This will work out any air in your steering system. If the problem persists then the power steering pump may need to be replaced.
It might be a faulty power steering pump. Try checking the level of the power steering fluid. It is probably best you have your power steering system checked by a mechanic.
Does the noise occur only when the vehicle is moving?
Try moving the steering wheel from side to side, while stationary (but don't do it too often, or you might damage something). If the noise is still present when the car is stationary, then it probably is the power steering system.
If the noise only occurs while the vehicle is moving, it could be a problem with the differential/final drive, or even wheel bearings.
