How to check & change a wiper motor, and repair wiper mechanism on 2001 VW Golf First time you must diagnose why windscreen wipers going slow and/or stopping. In order to find out the cause of wipers stopping you can try follows: 1. Carefully extract the wiper arms from their axles (two pieces). In some cases you need to use an extracting tool. Heed of the windscreen !!! 2. Disassemble the plastic covers from the bottom of the windscreen. 3. With the bonnet up you can start the engine, (transmission in "N" or "P" position and parking brake on). Now you must switch on the control lever of the wipers, and go to the engine compartment. If the wiper motor runs let the wiper motor running for a few minutes and switch off. Go to the step 4. If the wiper motor do not runs you must check first the electrical feeding of the motor. If the electrical feeding is OK you must replace the motor - steps 5, 6. If not, you must check electrical connections, the control switch of wipers and harness. 4. Now you must check the two bearings of wiper mechanism with your hand. In the most cases the left bearing is out of order (is very hot). This is the most encounter fault of the wipers running. 5. You must disconnect the electrical coupling of the motor (difficult assurance), unscrew three bolts of the mechanism and extract together with the motor. You must move them slowly between windscreen and engine computer box until the wiper motor go out together with the mechanism. This is the most difficult operation! 6. Now you can repair the bearings, replace entire wiper mechanism or replace the wiper motor. It is not very simply, but it works. Heed of the windscreen !!! Refit all in reverse order.
My wife has a 08 Fox and her front wipers stopped working it's just a fuse in bank 7 a 10 amp just replace with a new one or swap for the 10 amp fuse in bank 11 (just a warning lamp for the handbrake) until you get a new one. ;-)
The most common reason for this is a blown fuse, so using your vehicle owners book locate and check the fuse first. (if you don't have one then buy a Haynes manual for your car, the cost will pay for itself with the first repair you do). Modern automotive fuses not only have the current rating clearly marked numerically, but are colour coded and the fuses are designed so that you can easily see if they're blown when you pull them out to check. Most modern vehicle fuseboxes have a few spare fuses included and often have a small plastic tool to assist with pulling them out.
Normally a blown fuse needs further investigation as they should only fail if there's been a problem which would otherwise cause fire or other damage, but if wipers are operated inappropriately then it can cause enough load to blow the fuse. Sometimes the wiper spindles can become worn allowing water to get in
and corrode the internal parts; this will cause the spindles to bind or
even seize up and also cause the wiper motor to draw sufficient current
to blow the fuse.
Inappropriate use includes operating the wipers when the screen is dry, trying to use them to clear snow, ice or debris, operating them if the blades or arms are damaged.
If your problem turns out to be more than a straightforward blown fuse then please add a comment to my answer and I'll try to give you more specific advice. If my answer has solved your problem then please return the favour by rating my answer.
The switch for the rear wiper is on the actual windshield wiper switch for the front wipers, you have to push the lever forward to turn it on and then again to turn it off, to use the washer fluid for the rear wiper you push the same lever forward and hold it there till the washer fluid comes out.
