Question about 2003 GMC Envoy

2003 Envoy, abs light came on and emercency brake light on.

Its the coldest day of the year. -9 wind chill makes it feel like -20. Started the car. made a funny noise, crackaly sound. Drove 20 miles just fine until the lights came on. Restarted it and lights are still on. idling rough now. Manual says tow it.

There is a chance that your ABS module is going out, or has gone out, although that doesn't explain the rough idle problem. I had the same thing happen on my '01 Tahoe, and it's a known problem with ABS units. Repair at dealer is over $1200.00. Repair yourself with a rebuilt module is $150.00+shipping and a little elbow grease. Get on EBay, search for ABS module repair, and there is a company in Russia, Iowa who will rebuild the one you have, and warrant it for 5 years (GM won't do that with their $1200 repair.).

The rough idle I bet is coincidental and not related.

The brake and abs light just came on in my 2003 GMC envoy 4x4 what would cause it and where to start looking


Fist pull the code from your onboard computer with a OB2 scanner, that will give you the best clue, then clean and check your wheel sensors especially on the front axle. Then have the abs module checked. Most likely it is the wheel sensors, If you have a lot of brake wear they could be dirty or miss gapped, I would start there

Hello I have a 2003 gmc envoy 4wd had to replace front hub assemblies, brake rotors and brake pads. after the job was complete took it for a test drive and every thing worked fine. my wife drove it back...


sounds like the ABS kicked in while your wife was coming to a stop. This would be known as overactive ABS. It usually occurs under 5 mph while braking. It is usually caused by a speed sensor signal dropping out at slow speeds which makes the ABS module think that the wheel has locked up. It will then engage the ABS to unlock the wheel even though the wheel is turning. The brake pedal will fade and the grind of the ABS motor will be heard.

If this was an isolated incident it will be difficult to determine the source of the problem. It it becomes more frequent and predictable it will become a lot easier to figure out. Most of the time a scan tool capable of reading ABS data will be used. The vehicle will be driven while monitoring ABS wheel speed data. When the problem occurs the wheel speed on one of the wheels will drop out and then that wheel/bearing/sensor can be inspected.

Did you torque the axle nuts after installing the new hub and bearings to the proper spec?

Have you checked to see if the new bearings are still tight? with the wheel off the ground grab it at the 12 and 6 o'clock position. if there is any play than that could cause the problem.

Check on possible recalls such as this one listed on Repair Pal found on Google: I believe you may have a defective computer module that is going to be hard to find as it breaks down when it feels like not when you are expecting it to do so. Ask a garage to reset your computer, could be a recurring trip fault causing the car to shut down.

Clearing it might solve the problem - if not, the fault codes will tell you what the problem is!

Abs traction control fix tc light and brake light on


sometimes when acar with abs is jacked up the abs light will come on, thats not indicaion or a problem, disconect the batt pos terminal for about 20 seconds and recconect, the light will go off.

Check your brake pads first,as they have a wear warning clip on them.so if you hear a loud screaming noise.Then its quite possible they have worn causing ur warning lights to come on.And i would get anouther quote as that is quite dear for a pump replacement.If it is the pump.good luck pippall!!

you may have damaged the ABS sensor or wire to the sensor up front check the wire that runs from the inner finder well and make sure it connected to the ABS sensor on the spindle
