1999 Dodge Durango gears not shifting

RPM's are high when shifting gears. There is a slight resistance and pull while driving. The SUV dies out every now and then while driving sometimes while taking turns. The check engine light is on and when the gears do finally change its when the RPM has reached 3-5.1999 Durango V8 4WD with 140,000 miles. Transmission shifts hard into 3rd (it's an automatic) and revs high before it finally shifts. Transmission fluid is brownish. Local mechanic says it needs a rebuilt transmission, but he just drove it and looked at the fluid. I really don't (and can't afford) to spend $1800 to 2200 on this car. Any other fixes that might work on this before I go to this extreme?

Change trans filter. and fluid.the transmission speed sensor can do that some times. It will set a code a the light will come on. on do the neg battery cable for 10 min then press the break petal.put cable back on ,that will reset the light.the transmission will relearn how to shift.

The only other try would be the transmission fluid. Try changing it w/ a fresh one. If its still bad, you need to work on changing the transmission. Slight drag in shifting gears is actually normal in old automatic cars.
But dying out isnt.

the second code is govener pressure sensor. the pressure is to low. the first code is sensor voltage to low, i would check the wiring where it plugs into trans for corrosion. also make sure the kick down cable on the throttle is connected and not broke because this cable controls the line pressure.

How many rpm should a automatic 2001 dodge durango shift gears at.

There is no set shift point on any vehicle

If you hold the gas down longer or further
the shifts come later

Only the torque converter clutch lock-up
comes on at about 42 MPH, under even throttle
in high gear

1999 durango shifts hard runs up high rpm then shifts. only between first and second. if you increase speed moderayely it will jump out of second and into first with very high rpm

I have seen alot of governor pressure issues whith those and sometimes the oxygen sensor can short out they share the same ground so if whoever works on this changes governor solenoid and pressure switch bring this to there attention and change the 02 sensor at same time.
