Sorry to say but you will probably need a new or rebuilt transmission. Your car is equipped with a Ford " AOD" transmission and this is usually the first sign of going out. Continuing to drive it will result in complete loss of pull and replacement will be necessary, not to mention a tow truck to get it to a shop or home.loss overdrive - 12_24_2012_4_28_25_pm.png

Reverse went out and no overdrive 1996 Chevy Silverado

  1. ransmission fluid: Low or dirty transmission fluid can cause a range of transmission issues, including loss of reverse and overdrive. Check the transmission fluid level and condition, and consider flushing and replacing the fluid if it is dirty or low.
  2. Transmission filter: A clogged transmission filter can restrict the flow of fluid through the transmission and cause issues with reverse and overdrive. Consider replacing the transmission filter and flushing the fluid to see if this resolves the issue.
  3. Shift solenoid: The shift solenoid is responsible for controlling the flow of fluid through the transmission to engage different gears. If the solenoid is faulty or damaged, it can cause issues with reverse and overdrive. Consider having the shift solenoid tested and replaced if necessary.
  4. Valve body: The valve body is a complex component within the transmission that helps to control the flow of fluid and engage different gears. If the valve body is damaged or worn, it can cause issues with reverse and overdrive. Consider having the valve body inspected and replaced if necessary.
  5. Internal transmission damage: If none of the above issues resolve the problem, there may be internal damage within the transmission that is causing the loss of reverse and overdrive. In this case, it may be necessary to have the transmission rebuilt or replaced.
It's important to address these issues promptly to prevent further damage to the transmission or other components in your Chevy Silverado

I have a 1994 GMC Yukon 1500 4x4 transmission problem

Do you have access to a scan tool that can read stored transmission codes? That will point you in the direction of what's causing the lack of overdrive.

Here are some causes for loss of overdrive in your transmission (considering you have a 4L60E tranny).

  • Torque converter is failing to lockup, causing what could be mistaken as loss of overdrive. To test this out, drive on the highway and see if your RPM is jumping unsteadily with barely any changes to the gas pedal. If it does, your converter is failing to lockup.

  • Transmission is in limp mode - overdrive doesn't work in limp mode and limp mode is what the transmission will operate in when a serious fault is detected.

  • Problem with the linkage - the transmission linkage has a physical problem that's preventing it from going into overdrive. This would need to be corrected under warranty by the transmission shop.

  • Overdrive band failure - the transmission band responsible for fourth gear fails overtime and can no longer engage the overdrive gear. If this band wasn't replaced with the rebuild, this can be the culprit.

Why is the Overdrive disengaging while im driving

It is impossible to answer your question without knowing the YEAR, MAKE, and MODEL of your vehicle.
That being said, the overdrive will disengage when you are climbing hills or otherwise accelerating while driving.
If the overdrive disengages too easily, suspect a vacuum leak or an engine output power loss.

1997 grand cherokee orvis 44r3 tranny, no 4th gear up shift, pressure overdrive piston is 65 psi, would the overdrive solenoid partially stuck open would cause loss of pressure? Air pressured overdrive...

They had a lot of problems with the pressure sensors. I would replace the whole tail shaft because they had problems with them. You don't have to remove the trans to remove the shaft. Get one from the junk yard. Hope this helps leave comment.

4.0 auto will not shift into overdrive and check engine light is on

The check engine light is on to alert you to a failure in the system, that is most likely related to the loss of overdrive, have the system tested for the fault code that is stored in the computers memory, any Kragen or Autozone parts store will do this test for free. You will most likely get a code for a loss of signal from the VSS (vehicle speed sensor), that loss will cause the no OD symptom you have.

Can a electical problem cause the tranny not to shift into 3rd or 4th gear in drive or overdrive rebuilt the tranny change a couple other parts still having same problem

Hi, the trans in this year, has a 4 wire connector that is for overdrive only, the loss of gears is probably a mechanical issue internal to the trans, and an overhaul is probably in order. I would take it to a local trans shop, as diag is usually free. This will give you a better Idea. Good luck...
