Question about 1998 Land Rover Discovery

Water leaking from reservoir intermittently.

Hi,I have a Rover 25 ixl,5 door,1600,petrol. We are having major problems with the [radiator] water runnig dry. Sometimes we can go as long as a month,at other times a few days without the [radiator] running dry. We first notice the heater is inefficient,then no water,or it is depleted somewhat.Our local garage has done numerous tests and cannot find a reason for this. They have checked for air bubbles. Can you help,we're at our wits end!!!!!!!!.

    Did you note any weather conditions when is appears to deplete faster, or slower. Rad hoses have been checked for possible collapsing? Thermostat has been changed, rad cap changed? Cooling fan operating as required?

Is there any white smoke? These were bad for head gaskets but they also had problems with the inlet manifold gasket. the inlet manifold has a water jacket and gasket failure bleeds coolant into the cylinders.

Why water going out from the reserve tank in my batfinder


Your coolant system is leaking water.
Look under the vehicle for signs of the coolant whatever color it may be leaking down the engine.
If you have an automatic transmission, look at the fluid to make sure water is not leaking into the transmission via the cooler in the bottom of the radiator.
Check the tightness of all hose clamps on every rubber hose. Check the condition of the radiator cap and if it is older than 5 years, replace it with a new one anyway.
Take the overflow hose off the radiator and try blowing through it into the reservoir..if the system is dirty sometimes coolant is blocked from going into the reservoir when the engine heats up and therefore is dumped on the ground.
Check the reservoir for cracks.
Check it's cap if this is separate on your vehicle.
Please get back to us with your solution to this problem as it may help someone else in the future.

I get a 2001 nissan frontier the problem s the water s Ben overfill to the reservoir I always fill in water into the radiator that's the problem of my truck


reservoirs are just that reservoirs. Once the radiator has been filled to the radiator cap and the cap is operational the heated expanded water will flow out to the reservoir . When the engine cools down the resultant low pressure in the radiator sucks open a valve in the radiator cap and sucks water back into the radiator the . If you have to always fill the radiator and it is blowing water out into the reservoir but not sucking it back then I would have the cap tested for operation or check for a leak in the cooling system or hose from the radiator to the reservoir.

when the car overheats, is there still water in the radiator?

If there is water in the radiator and the car overheats, then it means there might be some dirt or blockage in the radiator or condenser.

When the car is on the motion, air passes through the front and assists the fan to cool the engine. There are situation whereby air doesn't have free flow because of blockage in the radiator and condenser. Dust and debris can cause blockage. If this be the case, have your radiator washed thoroughly and cleaned.

If there is no water in the radiator when the car overheats, then there is a probably a leakage from the water pump. Or maybe your fan isn't blowing properly. The fan might be blowing weak air.

The above are what could cause your engine to over heat.

So start the check from the radiator. Poor water into the radiator, wait for some minutes, look under the car and observe if water is going to leak. If there is a leak, it might be from the water pump or a leaking hose.

If water from radiator has no leak, have your radiator washed and clean the condenser has they might block air that is suppose to cool the engine.

Also, make sure your fan is blowing properly or well enough to cool the engine.

Make sure you have the above checked thoroughly as they are the major causes of problems like this.

This overheating problem could lead to a burnt gasket and this can dry the engine oil which will eventually knock the engine. So have this problem fixed to prevent further damage that will cost you more money.

Lastly, remove the hose that connects the radiator to the engine, water from the engine will come out. Pour water into the radiator, the water will flow through the hose down to the ground. Do this severally. Now connect the hose back to the engine, pour water into the radiator. Start the engine, the water in the radiator will reduce, add more water till radiator is full.

In summary, the major cause of over heating problem is from the radiator, fan, water pump, blockage in the hose, and dirt in in/on the condenser. These are area you need to concentrate on.

I forgot to mention that the acceleration meter or engine meter on the dash board shouldn't be more the 5. It should be below 5. If it is above 5, it can cause overheating. I hope you understand what I mean.....

My 2001 beetle is overheating, leaking coolant, no heat in car. The coolant is leaking from overflow container on the passger side. I changed all the hose but dont know why its leaking from overflow...

The fluid in radiator back up to the secondary plastic reservoir after 15 minutes when the car start. Then,steam came up on the tube located at the top of the plastic reservoir(that tube supose to drain...


Well, your vehicle is overheating. Are either of the electric fans running when the vehicle is turned on? Are you leaking any coolant around the water pump? When the vehicle is cooled off, feel of your main radiator hoses, the top one should be soft and pliable and the bottom one should be more rigid. It should feel like it has ribs in it. If it feels like the "ribs" in the bottom radiator hose are flattened and not round then you need to replace it. Also check the water level in the radiator when the vehicle is cooled off completely. You may just be really low on water. The overflow tank is only accurate when the radiator is full and working properly. Does the water blow out the overflow violently or just steam. If it is boiling out violently then you most likely have a bad head gasket. Check the exhaust when it is running and see if it is dripping water or releasing a lot of water vapor. If either is yes than you probably need head gaskets. Start with the easy problems and work your way up. Check every heater and water hose on the vehicle for leaks. Also take a flashlight and look all around the engine for steam after it has started overheating ( shut the car off first so you can hear the leaks and find them easier.). Don't take too long running it hot. It is mostly an aluminum engine and you can do major damage overheating it too much.

Crack in the cooling reseivor


depending on where it is at, the leak could be inexpensivly fixed. i suggest you have someone take a look at it. you risk overheating your car and creating way more expensive problems

Water not staying in Radiator


yes, not having an overflow reservoir for your radiator will cause you to lose water. As your engine warms up the water expands and creates pressure in the cooling system. When the pressure reaches a certain point(usually about 15 psi.) the radiator releives the pressure by releasing water into the overflow tank. When the engine cools back down the water shrinks pulling water back into the radiator from the overflow. If there is no overflow, the everytime the engine warms up on a drive water will be lost and not recovered on cooldown.
