If you need to replace the heater core it's really easy. Maybe 30 mins if you know what your doing. Remove the hoses (truck cold) from the heater core in the engine compartment (reclaim excess coolant that comes out). Remove screws from the passenger compartment fire wall area (inside), remove and reinstall heather core. Replace lost coolant. It's that simple.
May be the easiest heater core i have ever replaced.Disconnect the two hoses going into firewall on the passenger side.Locate a small cover just underneath the glove box .Should be about 10 x 3 inches and have 8 screws i think.It is on the bottom of heater box.remove the screws and cover and pull out the heater core.You are now half way.reverse procedure and you are done.Good Luck!
If it is necessary to remove the heater assembly, the cooling system must be drained before removing the heater core.

The heater housing is usually under the dash and must be removed to gain access to the heater core.
Procedures for replacing the heater core vary with the year, make, and model of car. It threfore necessary to consult the manufacturer's repair manuals for the proper procedure for replacement.
The heater housing is disassembled to get to the heater core.
Remove the access panels(s) or the split heater/air conditioning case to gain acess to the heater core.
Remove the heater coolant hoses.
Remove the cable and/or vacuum control lines (if equipped).
Remove the heater core securing brackets and/or clamps.
Lift the core from the case. Do not use force. Take care not to damage the fins of the heater core when removing.
To reinstall the heater core, reverse the removal steps.
When the heater core leaks and must be repaired or replaced, it is a very difficult and time-consuming job primarily because of the core's location deep within the firewall of the car. For this reason always leak test a replacement heater core before installation.
Disconnect heater hoses. Remove glove box. Remove cover fro heater core (8mm screws) . Remove parts in way of cover. Replace heater core. reassemble. I would recommend flushing system first. Top off coolant.
Remove the glove box door. Behind the glove box there will be a big plastic panel that contains the evaporator and the heater core. The heater core will be copper. That is the one you need to remove. Do not try to disconnect the aluminum one. That is for your AC. Remove the two heater hoses on the outside of the firewall that connect to the heater core and it will slide right out.
Check my tips and tricks in my profile. If you have a 88 ranger 4 cyl. like mine. It's a piece of cake. I can't imagine the 6 cyl version being that much more complicated but I haven't worked on one. If you have any mechanical skills and common screwdriver bits or small sockets it should take you all of 30 mins. And like everything else I ever had to replace on the truck it costs $25 - $35.
It's one of the easiest cores to replace that I have encountered. Disconnect heater hoses at firewall. Probably doesn't matter about hose placement, but I always mark them just in case. To remove the fiber cover under dash, take a flat blade screwdriver and pry out the center pin of the expansion clips that hold it in place. There are four 5/16 head screws that hold the bottom/drain tray cover. Core will pull through the firewall and then down. You may have to silicone/glue or replace the foam seal strips on the new core. Before you install the core, check the distance between the inlet and outlet tubes to ensure they match the openings in the firewall. This saves time. It helps if you have someone on the outside to guide you when stabbing the tubes through the firewall. Replace bottom cover. You may have to hold one of the tubes when reinstalling the first hose to the core. Replace any lost coolant and check for leaks prior to reinstalling the fiber cover. If the cover seal is in good condition, any leak should drain through the firewall, otherwise it may leak inside cab. .
