Question about 2000 Chevrolet Malibu

1 Answer

Hood latch Ok, I heard a screeching noise coming from my engine when I started my car. I went to pop the hood and the latch inside the car wouldnt work, finally it worked, when I went to shut the hood it won't shut all the way now. Any ideal's on the hood and the screeching. I recently had my tensioner pulley replaced. It's a 2000 Chevy Malibu. Thanks

what are the odds, this just happened to me this morning! the hood release lever will not return back to its normal position, and the hood will not latch completely.

Yeah my maintance guy at work sprayed my latch and then his wd40 can froze so he was able to push the cable to the side with a screw driver which them allowed it to shut. I havent opened the hood since then I've been afraid.

Yup mine did the same thing it needs to be oiled use a spray oil and also if it is cold were you are the hood latch cable can stick open so spray the cable inside at the latch Lockdicer will help for cold days. If your latch is hard to pull <latch handle> don't force it. It will break so if the car will start warm the car up first this will melt the ice. The sceeching is the powersteering pump check the fluid if low if it is not low then it is your pump not to hard to replace. Hope this helps

Engine screeches when running. revving the motor makes it stop momentarily

Could be a belt screeching. Fan belt, A/C belt, Serpentine Belt, alternator belt, etc. Easiest way to isolate which belt is to open the hood and use your ears to see where the screeching is coming from. Left, right, front, behind the engine? Spray some WD-40 on the belt you think is making noise and if it quiets right away, then that is the belt making the noise. Either the tensioner needs adjusting or the belt needs replacing. The WD-40 does not hurt the car, it'll start screeching again in a few days when it wears off.

Was driving my 98 jeep cherokee and the check engine light came on then battery guage went to zero. killed the jeep the it wouldnt start bu heard clicking noise.waited a while and jeep started but when I...

check the fuses make sure none of them blew and if its not that then its proble a bad alternator, witch caused the ripple effect when one thing goes on a newer car no matter how small it will trigger a bunch of random events such as transmission not going into gear, i assume its a automatic i highly dought that the tps went with the low voltage, and if your hearing a clicking noise its either not enough juice going to the starter, or a coil wire popped off

Cant get the hood to pop so i can opennthe hood

If you have a inside hood release, the cable might have come off the latch system. If you can see the latch through the front hood seam or the grille, use a long screw driver or putty knife blade to trip the latch. If the latch release is OK, the POP-UP spring might be broken and you could use a coat hanger wire to pull up on the hood as the latch is released.

Turns over but wont crank...horrible screeching noise

To clarify, if the engine cranks or turns over but won't start, look for a stuck pulley on the engine. You may be hearing the belt slipping on that pulley. Take the belt off and try turning each pulley - also try starting the engine with the belt off.

Try and bump the top of the engine or just have some one hold the release latch and lift up on the engine until it pops open.

Whining in the engine

I had the same whining noise, but after a minute or two it would go away. It turned out to be my water pump. It wouldnt turn first thing in the morning and the belt was just running through the pulley, (causing the whining noise). This may not be your problem, but it is easy to check. Just pop your hood and see if the fan is turning.

Clicking Noise Coming From Under The Hood

Have you checked your belts? A piece of belt may have come off and been slapping under your hood, and then fell off completely. While it was slapping, your computer would have detected the slow down of pulleys etc. and caused your engine light to come on. Then when the piece broke off, everything would be back to normal. Let me know!
