I have changed my waterpump on 97 f250, no leaks, and the rest of the cooling sys is new. Now my temp. guage is all over and moves close to red when i travel past 60mph, when I slow down or stop at red

I have recently replaced, Radiator, Fan Clutch, Hoses, Thermostat, WaterPump, all of cooling system. Most recently-Last week the Water pump which was leaking from the gasket about a inch below the bolt that connects through the A/C-Power steering. Not leaking at all through weep holes. Even before the W.Pump change with leaking i did not have this issue with the temp.Guage. I'm so lost and would apreciate any advice. Note I'm not a weekend warrior, i have been though auto mech. school many years back. Thanks Joey C.

SOURCE: Engine Temperature Guage on Dashboard indicates overheating

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand, your described condition indicates a sticking thermostat, that is there is considerable delay before the thermostat opens. It is also possible that there is some restriction wherein the thermostat is not opening completely when the triggering temperature has been reached. As a test and to confirm, you could try temporarily removing the thermostat and operate the engine without one; observe temperature. The side effect of this test is that it would take some time to warm-up the engine, but operationally should not cause anything untoward. Of course, care has to be exercised that the gasket would still be intact.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: Cressida still pegs temp guage????????

1st do you loose water from the header tank or water dripping anywhere under car when stopped yes or no if yes to loss of water from h/tank then the problem is you have a Head Gasket blowing compression into the water jacket next to the cylinder, and its only small now but will get worse very soon, so get the Head removed and cracked tested and Head surface ground . SOURCE: 97 Cougar....Radiator not leaking....water pump

If your not low, and your not overheating, chances are that the level sensor is either dirty, or faulty. It's located in the coolant resevoir.

My 96 croun Vick was getting hot every now and then I changed the thermostat now it's running bad like it has bad miss an getting hot even more what could the problem be

Hi there, it sounds like you have a couple of things possibly, with an attempt to fix by a part replacement, and a good choice for a guess in the thermostat, and in most cases probably would have fixed it. But not your car right? The next step then I think would be to thoroughly inspect your cooling system, grab a Flashlight and check all fittings/clamps-tighten if loose, check hose's and radiator (if radiator is plastic it could have a hairline crack) check with car running and with it off, while running and in Park, remember to put on your emergency brake. Check reservoir cap, the cooling systems operate under pressure, and the cap on reservoir is important for system to operate correctly. If you have just been adding water and not coolant, your engine will heat up quicker, coolant serves as a lubricant for cooling system and engine block and as a system fluid needed for engine to operate to specs. Check coolant if any, if not add some immediately, get the already diluted type. Keep an eye on your temp guage when driving, if temp begins to rise, turn your car heat on high, and you should see your temp guage go down.If you are going through fluid you more than likely have a leak.If waterpump is leaking, it will need replaced immediately. waterpump leaking, in most cases you will notice a small puddle of water under center of engine area

Temp. guage indicates overheat 10 mins. from startup

Hi Reggie, I'm glad to help. TWO things I want you to check. ONE: You have changed out a lot of stuff, so you may have air trapped in the cooling system, you'll need to remove the radiator cap and let it run until your at operating temperture, while watching to make sure it doesn't overheat on your of-course. If after running the engine say 30 minutes and topping off the coolant if needed, it still runs hot. Move on to: TWO: If you have the electric fan, some do, some don't. If it is electric make sure the fan is coming on, if it doesn't come on then you have found your problem, replace the fan assembly. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Reggie!

2005 Honda Pilot. Temp guage goes up but then comes back down to half when the a/c or defrost is on. If sitting in traffic is still goes up until moving again.

There are several possible problems causing the temp increase.
  1. Low coolant level
  2. Leak in radiator hose
  3. Leak in radiator
  4. Bad waterpump
With low coolant levels by any 1 or a combination of 1-4, the vehicle will run hot at low speeds and at idle. Running the AC or heater pushes the remaining coolant through the system faster, aiding in cooling the engine but all indications are you've definitely have a cooling system issue that should be looked at immediately before doing damage. If the coolant level is good (when car is cold, open radiator cap and check for coolant level), the issue most likely lies in the waterpump.

97 transport 3.4 engine- New radiator, thermostat, temperature sensor, water pump and new low coolant level sensor. Temperature guage goes to 260 degrees but engine does not over heat. Bled air from cooling...

Check the operation of the cooling fans at the radiator. While idling disconnect the coolant temp sensor at the top left (drivers side) of the engine. It will be a 2 wire connector near the thermostat housing. When disconnected the coolant fans should come on immediately, if not you have an electrical issue with the relays or blown fuse. Check the fuses first in the underhood electrical panel. Next swap the cooling fan relay with an identical one next to it, if the fan works the relay is open.

1990 honda accord temp gauge above hot limit.

Hi there,

Firstly - DO NOT run engine, when guage reads hot, as this will cause costly damage to head gasket & alloy engine head.

The fact that guage takes 1min to read HOT, would confirm the guage IS working properly.

So, other components which are likely to cause hot readings (in this order) are:

- lack of coolant (or leakage somewhere): is there sufficient green coolant at the correct level? Top up mixture to correct level. Repair any leaks.

- collapsed radiator hose: when engine is cold, start engine, then quickly watch both upper & lower radiator hoses to see if either begins to flex inwards (collapse). Replace if either hose is collapsed.

- bad/incorrect thermostat rating : when replacing thermostats, you must ensure it is of the SAME temp rating (they all differ).

- Incorrect Temp sensor rating: the ratings of this sensor must be within manufacturer's spec's.

- bad waterpump: the engine relies on the waterpump to distribute the coolant throughout the entire system. If waterpump is faulty, coolant will not flow quick enough, causing overheating.

If you still believe all of the above components are OK, then have your cooling system "pressure tested". This test should be done, before looking further at other electrical components.

Cheers,

97 transport 3.4 engine- New radiator, thermostat, temperature sensor, water pump and new low coolant level sensor. Temperature guage goes to 260 degrees but engine does not over heat. Bled air from cooling...

Are your cooling fans working? that will definately be a problem if not working. if they are working shut car off and feel the radiator is it the same temp all over or is it hot in only top or one smaller area. if you do not have same temp feeling on all of radiator your radiator may be plugged.

Car over heating. tempature gauge fluxuates

Your overheating problems can have several possible causes.
1) Airlock in heating system - solution - bleed air from cooling system. Method is dependent on make/model of vehicle
2) Radiator blocked - solution - drain and flush radiator
3) Failed waterpump - solution - fit new waterpump
4) Engine thermostat stuck in closed position - solution - fit new thermostat
5) Electric cooling fan (if fitted) failing to operate - solution - check fan, fan operating switch, all wiring and connectors
6) Not enough coolant in system - solution - check and top up to required level. Also check all hoses for sign of leakage.
7) Faulty temperature gauge giving incorrect reading
