Question about 1996 Saturn SL

1 Answer

1996 Saturn SL, 4 cylinder, auto trans.. Car starts and runs fine. However if you turn off the ignition when the car is hot, the car will not start again until the engine cools down. When you turn the key while the engine is hot the dash lights come on as normal, but the engine does not turn over, not even a click when you turn the key. i have the same problem with my '96 wagon, don't know what to do, wont turn over when hot, have replaced the starter three times in 6 months cause it is burning them out. what else can be causing this kind of problem. am getting some smoke at start, then dissipation after it warms up. if i turn the car off it wont turn over completely and then when it hits 1000 or so rpms it drops then does it again, then drops, over and over. a friend has said it might be a o2 sensor: could this be the problem?

Form the saturn..........when starters age they tend to have problems when engine hot.You need to replace the starter.
As for the wagon it sounds like some sort of ignition problem if it's turning but not starting........I have seen o2 sensors cause this behavior. However to be sure you need to obtain an OBDII code reader to be positive of the issue.
Thanks for choosing FIX YA!

cylinder 4 misfire ,now if this is a GM product then i think you may need a reconditioned ECU init as if this is the 4 cyl engine and its same as the opel astra and zafiro and the vectra then its a common fault with a 2000 to 2004/5 model the computer is bolted to the engine inlet manifold and very weak and susceptable

OBD will not pass on saturn. It tells me I need a camshaft position sencer. My garage doesnt want to mess with it.Where is this item located and is it an easy replaced piece?

The 4 cylinder engine in your 1996 Saturn SL doesn't use a cam sensor. I know, then how could there be a code for the cam sensor? Well, The electronic ignition (EI) module supplies a signal to the PCM whenever it determines that the #4 cylinder fired on its compression stroke.

You should start by checking to make sure your spark plug wire terminals on the ignition coils are not corroded. Using a multimeter, check the resistance and continuity of each ignition wire. If your car is misfiring, replace your spark plug wires and have the code cleared at your local AutoZone or Advance Auto, unless you have a code scanner.

If the code comes back, most likely you have a bad crankshaft position sensor throwing the code. While the engine is running there should be a +5 volts on the crank sensor everytime the magnetic pickup reads the crankshaft. Using a multimeter you can check the voltage to see if the sensor is functioning properly.

That sounds like the start of a transmission problem. Get the code pulled from an auto parts store, they will do it for free. Then check the code.

I also had the same problem with my 1996 Saturn SL1, and it also was the starter. I thought it was an electrical problem until, just on a whim I pulled the starter. One of the brushes was almost gone and the commutator looked like hell. I cleaned up the commutator and brushes, and it spun like a top for about a month, until the worn out brush finally died. I also ordered a new starter the same day of the cleaning. Just a word of advice if you will be buying a new starter, go on Ebay Motors and find the store dbelectrical. They sell brand new starters for $49.95 with no core charge plus $12 UPS shipping. So $61.95 vs $150+ at your local parts store....Myself and my friend from work have both bought and daily use starters from them with no problems or complaints to report.
