Oil leaking from what looks like the harmonic balancer bearing

1989 suzuki vitara 1.6l injected auto.

I have an oil leak at the front of the block from (I think ) the crank shaft bearing.

You need to pull the harmonic balancer and replace the seal... if i remember right it's a one peice press fit seal

been awhile since i did one... for taking it out a screwdriver will work as long as you are careful not to mar any of the surfaces. there is a special tool to put the new seal on... but gently tapping all around the seal evenly should install it.... the tool basically looks like a large socket. if you have something the right diameter that will put pressure on the metal part of the seal that will work.

I think i even used a vacuum cleaner pipe once... (had lots of room to work) but you can improvise something.

I have oil leaking from either the timing chain or the front main

if the front seal leak you can just replace the seal, if the timing cover is leaking then you will have to remove the cover. while you are in there, I suggest that you go ahead to replace the timing chain ( timing set ), seal and a new cover. parts cost less than 100 dollars.

Oil leak

It is possible on these engines. If the seal becomes hardened, it can begin to wear into the harmonic balancer. It is best to replace the seal and they also sell a kit that sleeves the harmonic balancer and helps to seal any leaks. let me know if any instructions are needed.

Oil leak from crank shaft seal by harmonic balancer.

might be a front main seal... pretty easy or most likely it's a leak at front of oil pan

96 suzuki vitara - radiator empties but no visible leak

Check the passanger side floor board for moisture this could indicate a bad heater core. Then I would check the engine oil and make sure its not milky looking (head gasket). make sure when you fill it let it run with the cap open with you looking into the cap to be sure is circulating and not vapor locked (air pocket)
hope this helps

Suzuki Grand Vitara Oil Filter Replacement Disaster

Four or six cylinder engine and behind or front of the oil filter? Looked under my GV 2007 2.7 V6 and can not locate a shiny metal box next to the oil filter. Only thing that was shiny was the exhaust manifold and oil sump which are quite hard to break or puncture. If it was the oil sump you will have to remove it and get it welded as a bog will not hold on heated engine parts.
