You can replace and or fix it. Before you proceed make sure that there is no open or short circuit in the fuel gauge system.

Disconect batery for one hour , when you fill gas stop at first click , do not overfill .

could be a few things, this must be a hybrid, 1st make sure all the tires are inflated properly, the tire pressure will be stamped on the side of the tire, also if it a hybrid it has regentave breaking system which means the more you use the brakes the more power is returned to the battery system, also the higher the alcohol content in the fuel you buy the lower the fuel mileage, what i recommend is to fill the car with the best fuel you can get NO ALCOHOL so you can get a base line on the fuel mileage then try other brands and grades to see which ones give you the best mileage.

funny that you mention ' Dark Matter ' -- there is a possibility that you might have water contamination in the tank (?), you can try and get some gas additives that remove water from the fuel. also, there is the possibility that fuel pick up line has been damaged and is not getting fuel from as low in the tank as it use to.

I do not think you have any dents in your tank, nor do I think its empty when the guage indicates that it is.

It is more then likely a fuel level sending unit which is located inside of the tank. They are not fun to replace, empty the gas, drop the tank, and then replace the sensor.

the float inside the tank attatched to the fuel pump unit is stuck. happy holidays

very common problem, esp with high milage, the fuel vent system is plugged, because the charcoal canister has come apart and the particles have traveled thru and plugged the fuel vent valve, what happens is when you add fuel the air in the tank cant vent out as the liquid displaces the air and backs up thru the filler neck, this however can get costly.

Sounds like your fuel sending unit may be bad, or you have a hell of a leak. Should still be under warranty.
