Question about 2001 Dodge Durango

RPM fluctuation 2001 Dodge Durango 5.9L R/T. Sometimes when I am cruising down the freeway the rpm will jump from say 2200 to 2500 or 2200 to 2700 and then back down to normal. The other day for the first time I got off the freeway and the rpm were fluctuating from 600 down to 400 in a steady slow rythym. The dash lights would fade when the rpm would go down to 400 but not the headlights. One day out of frustration I guess, I was getting on the freeway and it did that so I floored the gas peddle and after that it seemed to stop. Sometimes if I start the truck and it does that, if I rev the engine it seemes to stop. This might be just a fluke but when I added some gumout fuel treatment, I wouldn't have the problem when I start it up and barely on the highway. That lasted for about a gas tank though. I always put the recommended premium fuel in it also.

    My 2001 Durango has the 4.7 L but does the same thing. I notice that when cruising at 60 MPH, the engine will fluctuate by as much as 200 RPM. It seems to me as though it is extremely sensitive to the smallest throttle movement (Ex. whenever I hit a bump). When using cruise control the problem gets even worse; almost as though the cruise isn't "gentle" enough on the accelerator or something.

    my 2001 has gone throught fuel throttle sensor switches like crazy which caused my RMP's to jump. Turned out that the wiring harness had a short and caused the senors to malfunction. not a cheap fix.

    I have a 2001 dodge durango 4.7 liter engine and i'm having problems with fluctuateing rpms during start up and during all speeds when driving. when i start the engine in the morning it'll stay reved up until i shift the transmission and then its hard to do that i don't know if i'm really messing something up. during driving i could be driving at 35 miles an hour, 45 miles an hour or 70 miles an hour and the rpms will fluctuate up and down. its happening alot more now then its ever has. i would greatly appreciate if someone could help me figure this out. joey

    when the rpm guage fluctuates... does the actual revs of the motor change ?

I?ll add this; In addition to what my friend rejakwilson just said; I suggested that you check the performance of your electric Alternator; It seems it's NOT producing enough Volts. It must produce at least 13.7 volts with some loads ON. Such head light, air-condition ON. Alternator produces between 13.7- 14.8 volts to power the car accessories & charging the battery. Don't forget to clean or replace the fuel screen which is attached in the bottom of the fuel pump inside your fuel tank. you can access some fuel pump/filter assy. thru inside of your car aft cabin under the aft seat, that is what is called internal fuel screen; however: there is another external filter some time underneath RH side of your vehicle, & some time in the engine compartment. Sounds asif you need a REAL GOOD Flushing of Fuel System, Now you can EASyly Purchase a Cleaning kit and Fallow Directions ---OR-- Pay a SHOP to do it For Some Anbelievable Price.

What you did in Tromping the gas Pedal is what I call Gettin the COB WEBS out Fuel Injecter Cleaner INTANK is a Good way to KEEP it Clean but a GOOD FLUSHING is what gets all the Junk OFF & out of the Internal Fuel Parts. Hope this Helps Rate me PLEASR

1999 durango shifts hard runs up high rpm then shifts. only between first and second. if you increase speed moderayely it will jump out of second and into first with very high rpm


I have seen alot of governor pressure issues whith those and sometimes the oxygen sensor can short out they share the same ground so if whoever works on this changes governor solenoid and pressure switch bring this to there attention and change the 02 sensor at same time.

this sounds like a bad connection or a bad VSS sensor... either way it needs replacement/repair.. if the tach sends 0 info to the ECM the car will quit or run in an open loop causing it to run real poor... have someone like Auto Zone??? scan it for free and give you the computer code results.... this will help you unravel the mystery of the stalling.

When I engage the cruise control is holds speed but rmp surges periodically around 2-300 rpm.


It could be your transmission trying to find the right gear it will jump around on diffrent road surfaces and going up hills/down hills. It is usaully noticable on cruise because it is at a constant speed and your thinking why would it need to shift. Sometimes it doesnt even really shift the gear its so inbetween it just jumps back really fast.

Won't idle steady; speeds up and slows down;even when your driving down the road it will jump from like 1.5 rpm to 2.


The idle control system is probably malfunctioning. have your mechanic check the idle control solenoid
