Question about 2002 Dodge Durango

2 Answers

2001 Dodge Durango 5.9L R/T. 93,000 miles. When driving on the freeway, the idle sometimes jumps. I will be driving at 60 miles an hour at 2,200rpm. Sometimes it will jump to 2500rpm and back down again or maybe jump up to 2700rpm and back down to normal. The other day after getting off the freeway sitting at a red light, the idle was dipping from 400 back to 600. That was the first time it had done that. My dash lights would fade when the idle got slower but not the headlights. The suv doesn't do this all the time. Maybe 3-4 out of 10 times when I drive it. I got frustrated at the problem and floored the gas peddle while getting on the freeway and it seemed to stop. Sometimes when I start up the truck and the idle fluctuates like that, if I rev the engine it seems to stop doing that.

Could be the Idle Air Control on the throttle body. A simple, low cost fix. Most auto stores carry the part.

Engine turns over but dies right away, then acts like the battery is dead. I jump started it but the engine dies unless I give it gas.

Try resetting the computer by removing one battery cable for 1/2 minute. Re-attach cable & drive one mile--should be reset. ( My Dodge does this & wil not reset until I drive it a mile or so.)

Won't idle steady; speeds up and slows down;even when your driving down the road it will jump from like 1.5 rpm to 2.

The idle control system is probably malfunctioning. have your mechanic check the idle control solenoid

U will need to drive a mixture of stop and go, city low speed and freeway miles, this can take a week and 20-50 miles or so for the system to finish it's internal self testing. this is called a drive cycle test.

there is a malfunction in the transmission somewhere. this is a problem you cannot fix in a basic garage because of the diagnosis tools needed for this trans. diagnosis. could be bad TV cable adjustment if not anything major. durango transmissions usually dont last past 100,000 miles.

2001 Dodge Durango will start from a jump.

replace the battery, on a dodge when battery is weak the idle air control solenoid tries to search for the right position. and will keep stalling sometimes wont stay running.

99 Dodge Durango Dies When Slowing

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
