1997 Dodge Intrepid engine/electrical problem

I currently own a '97 Intrepid 3.5L 24valve V6 engine. My check engine light has come on and even after replacing a water pump that broke and other minor problems it doesn't seem to want to go off. It will actually flicker on and off when I am driving before just staying on again. I don't know what the problem with it is. Also I have noticed a loud ticking noise coming from the engine, my father and me both have tried to look for what the cause of it is but have no idea. I have been keeping up on my maintainance it was a free car from a friend last year but has 150,000 and some change in miles on it. I went to move the car earlier here at my job and it almost didn't want to start and seemed like the engine was going to shut off after it started. I turned it on and off several times with the same result before it decided to just stay on fine. Listening a little closer I noticed a grinding or kind of scratching/scrapping sound coming from the engine somewhere, even a co-worker noticed it when I reved the engine, as it was going down in RPMs it was very noticeable. He told me it might be a "Misfire?" That it was normal and sounded fine to him. I don't know about that but help please? I've been looking into getting a new car and if this is stuff that will cost me a lot to fix please I'm asking for honest help here.

I just changed the oil 2 weeks ago. I was going to grab a quart of oil when I was out this weekend after I got paid. If that's the service you are talking about. I haven't taken it in for a tune up which is something it might need too but I've been told there are a lot of oil leaks in the engine as well. As I think I said it was given to me for free from a family friend with over 120,000 miles on it when I got it. It was running hot for a little bit back in november when idling but figured it was the thermostat since I'd just changed the water pump and it was only doing it when idling, rarely while driving.

Yes, that's all upto date. I've kept up on it pretty well because it's my only means of transportation right now. There's been nothing but oil on the stick when checked, no antifreeze. I'm not really car savy but no green fluid's been on my stick when I check the oil. I do occassionally get exhaust that comes out white from the tail pipe in the mornings or like earlier when I started it, haven't paid much attention but it might have always done that. But yes the oil is upto level. Might need a small bit, not even half a bottle.

DO YOU HAVE ENOUGH OIL IN THERE AND WHEN WAS THW LAST TIME YOU SERVICED IT? DOES IT OVERHEAT? IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR LIFTERS ARE NOISY.AND IF IT DOES OVERHEAT,BE SURE THERE IS NO ANTIFREEZE IN THE OIL.THEN WE'RE LOOKING AT HEAD GASKETS.

The most likely senario is that the water pump went bad which caused the overheating in the first place. Then after the engine shut down, the water pump seized up. When the engine was restarted, the timing belt started to smoke because the water pump, which runs off the timing belt, was not turning. Since the engine overheated to the point of shutting down, blown head gaskets are a possibility. Put a new timing belt and water pump on it and start it up. If it runs OK, you're good to go.

if it is the 3.5 liter v6 then the thermostat will be at the top of the engine where the radiator hose hooks up to the engine there will be a short pipe where radiator hooks up and two or three bolts holding it to the engine it is not under the plastic intake plenum it is forward of that .
