Question about 1987 Chevrolet Corvette

87 corvette runs rough when charging

I replaced the alternator in my vette and the thing is choking, coughing, backfiring and wont idle right. When I unplug the alternator it runs perfect. This started happening when I had the 4 speed trans replaced with an automatic. I also noticed that I have continuity between the chassis and battery with the negative terminal disconnected. Where do I start to resolve this Problem.

Check all your wiring. Make sure the wiring on your passenger side goes down to the starter. It's in a little tube. Make sure none of those wires are pinched. Also, you should make sure you have good grounds from your body to your engine. Do you still have the 4speed that came out of the vet? Have a 66 chevelle ss, looking for 4 speed.

As weird as this sounds, take off the alternator and take it in for testing. Sounds like it is leaking AC into your electrical system. If this is help, please post as so. If it is so, please post as fixya. TY

I've a 1981 Vette that idles very rough with a cold engine start.

You need to have the choke adjusted so it runs on a fast idle so the engine can warm up or you may need the carb to be rebuild and adjusted properly.

Doing a tuneup on a 1991 toyota celica. replaced plugs, wires, rotor and distrubutor cap. just bought car and it was running rough - plugs were carbon fouled, continuity of wires was poor, so tuneup was...

Coughs and backfires is definitely a timing problem. Without a timing light..you can get the timing pretty close...Loosen the distributor bolt and move the distributor a bit one way and tighten the bolt slightly and try to restart the car. Note, if it starts or gets better..in other words by moving it the way you did, did it try to start easier or did the coughing and backfiring get worse. If not continue ever so slightly in the direction you moved it, till the car starts and and is running. If it gets worse moving it in the direction you started with, move the distributor the other way and do the same as listed above.

This is not the absolute 'Right Fix' so to speak, but will definitely get the car to a point where you should get it running.

Intermittent problem. Truck ran fine one day and barely ran the next time I started it. Runs incredibly rough like it's missing but not like a consistently missfiring plug but missfiring on all plugs...

Check for sticking idle air control valve and stuck open EGR valve. Both are common causes for very rough engine operation due to fuel-air ratio being too far off. Also check for large vacuum leak such as from rubber hoses connecting PCV valve to intake. Feel around for squishy or oily rubber which would indicate a leaking hole in the rubber hoses.

99' Corvette will not start

If it's been sitting for a year without being started, I can almost guarantee the battery is dead. At the very minimum you are going to need to either have that battery charged or replaced. I would replace it if it was me, I'm not sure it will even hold a charge after that length of time unused. If the alternator was working properly before you parked the car, it's probably still ok. Nice car by the way, I had a Torch Red 98 Vette and now drive a 03 Anniversary Red Vette. Good luck.

1986 vett

Your automatic choke is probably sticking. Spray it out with 2+2 Carb and Choke Cleaner. Do this when the car is cold so you don't start a fire. While the car is running see what position the choke butterfly is in when the engine is hot. If it is partially closed you may have a bad spring in the choke mechanism or it may need an adjustment.

Having DTC 0300 intermittant error code with rough idle and stumbling acceration on 2002 corvette with 20,000 miles just started, worse at idle and acceleration

iwould say try some octane booster sounds like poor quality fuel p0300 is a multiple misfire so start with that and i believe vettes are supposed to run 89 or better octane

''Choke'' warning light on an '81 Corvette

have you checked to see if the choke is on? this light lets u know the choke has an open circuit, it is heated by stator wire from the alternator.
