Putting the Soft top down on a Capri

Hi there,

I just bought a 1991 Ford Capri. I feel so silly for asking this, but I can't figure out how to get the top down. I understand how to release the front of the roof, but I'm not sure how I'm supposed to release the back panel to get the roof fully down. Can someone please help me?

SOURCE: 2003 ford ranger parking brake won't fully release

there is a TSB for this as I have the same issue. if damp and cold the drums are now very capable of throwing off the moisture and the pad sticks to the drum. remove the drum, clean it, replace pads if necessary and drum and then silicone all the points where moisture can enter the drums there is also a shim kit available for the TSB your ford dealer will know about it. At least he should. I operate a foreign domestic shop and I know about it..

SOURCE: FORD CAPRI 1990

My wife had a mid 80's capri and the latch/release button was on the drivers side door pillar at the back of the door near the bottom of the pillar, the door had to be open to see it, there was a second one that we only found when selling the car on the bottom of the drivers side door arm rest. Not sure if that helps as yours is newer but it might give you a couple of more places to start. On my son's Mercury Topaz you have to open the glovebox and push a semi=concealed button on the right..Those lovely engineers at Ford! lol...

Remove alternator, replace alternator. Get your self a service manual if you can't figure it out. They sell them at the same place the alternator is sold.

I wrote while ago thanks for the help now my 1991 mercury capri is rattling I have been told it is the cover plate for cat. coverter how do i tighten it? Also clutch feels weak how to tighten?

Sometimes a stainless hose clamp cam stop the rattles, sometimes it takes a spot or 2 of welding.

If your Capri is not an XR2, then you have hydraulic clutch, no adjustment is possible. If it doesn't work right, the master or slave clutch cylinder may be going bad, time to replace them. good luck...Chris

How do you remove the soft top handle from the Mercury Capri?

I'm sure you have figured this out by now, 6 months later, but here goes...3 screws hold the handle in, 2 you can see, phillips, and one hidden by a trim piece that extends across the front of the top, left to right. That trim can be pried out with a screwdriver...it is held in place at 4 points...keep prying, it WILL come out. After replacing the latch just pop that trim piece back on, it just pushes into place...good luck...Chris

1991 mercury capri turbo xr2: are engine rebuild parts available, e.g., new pistons, rods, cranks, etc..

Your car looks like a Ford Capri engineered in Australia from a Mazda 323. These are quite common in New Zealand and Australia . Unfortunately they came out at the same time as the MX5 and didn't sell well.
Do a search on Google images for Ford Capri to see if they are the same. If they are parts are readily available ex Mazda
